Looks like she wasn't meant to pull this one out in the end:

Kara Goucher is now on the lead pack in the 113th Boston Marathon. A 30 year old lady from Queen's New York, Kara Goucher had her debut in 2008 Beijing Olympics where she qualified for the in the 5000m and 10,000m. Right now, Kara Goucher is apparently trying her way to be the first U.S. female winner since Lisa Larsen Rainsberger in 1985 in this year's Boston Marathon.

Kara Goucher stared straight ahead, running tall as she entered the final mile of the Boston Marathon. Deriba Merga of Ethiopia took the lead at mile 19 and never looked back, winning the men's race in Boston.

The women’s defending champion from Ethiopia, Dire Tune, was on Goucher’s heels, and Kenya’s Salina Kosgei was not far behind. But when Goucher, the newest hope for American women’s distance running, reached for that last kick, she had nothing left.

Kara Goucher finish third, nine seconds back, collapsing in tears in the arms of her husband, Adam.

Third place makes the podium, but for the Americans Kara Goucher and Ryan Hall, each heaped with weighty expectations on this day, it turned into a deflating consolation prize.

Kara Goucher, who finished third in New York last November in her debut, was trying to become the first woman from the United States to win here since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach did so in 1985.
