University of Louisville head men's basketball coach Rick Pitino has reportedly asked the FBI to investigate his claim that he's the target of attempted extortion by a woman named Karen Sypher. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the FBI confirmed Pitino went to the agency with the claim a month ago and that there is an ongoing investigation.

The paper also quoted Pitino in a statement released Saturday saying he and his family were recently threatened with the scheme, and he went to the FBI after receiving the threat. The statement also says he intends to "vigorously defend my reputation and the character of my family against any criminal scheme to extort money."

Louisville TV station WDRB reported that it confirmed the person attempting extortion is Karen Sypher, who is married to Louisville equipment manager Tim Sypher.

The Courier-Journal also had a statement from the school, specifically Louisville president Dr. James Ramsey and athletic director Tom Jurich, that said it stands by Pitino and his family and it will have no further comment.
