May 21, 2006Nelly Furtado on SNL: Promiscuous Girl and Maneater
Hate to be the hater, but I think I liked Nelly Furtado better when she was an Esthero wannabe, instead of a Fergie wannabe. Actually watching this SNL performance of "Promiscuous" reminds of the horrible rap skit on Prince's "Love 2 the 9s." "Nelly furtado preforming her new singles maneater and promiscuous on the snl season finale 20/5/06 " Other feedback seems to be similarly sour on Nelly's new style: "so i just watched nelly furtado on snl. Almost every "Nelly Furtado on SNL" blog post I read in technorati was along these lines.. Nelly might have to pick up a lot of new fans to offset all the old ones she's alienating with this new style. Posted at May 21, 2006 1:03 PM | TrackBackComments
Maybe you should listen to some of Nelly's older work before your judge her new stuff. Nelly has always had the hip hop aspects on her albums. So you cant just judge her because this isnt like "I'm Like a Bird". Personally I like "Promiscuous", it took me a few listens to get use to it, and now I love it. Personally, I thought she performed well, and looked stunning on SNL. Posted by: Bah Mate at May 24, 2006 8:20 AM Nelly Furtado has worked with Missy Elliot and Ms. Jade in the past. Her music did always have an essence of hip-hop. This isn't surprising to me. Promiscuous and Maneater sound great. She can work the style, trust me. Posted by: Vin Constantine at May 26, 2006 7:04 AM she's just like all mainstream music. flawed to the core because it doesn't actually reflect artistic talent. no one will remeber her in 2 years. like mace. Posted by: vertigo at May 26, 2006 7:38 PM I think these two songs are great. I don't understand how everyone gets all worked up just because she's changed her style. Like A Bird was a good song, but so are these. And I think she fits into this genre great! x Posted by: Janie at May 29, 2006 1:36 PM I loved Nelly when she came out with "Whoa Nelly" it was extremely funky and different, she was also like 20 then, people change as they get older... "Folklore" was completely different then "Whoa Nelly" it was more of I guess that folky kind with an ethnic twist of honesty. Posted by: Sarah Julian at May 29, 2006 9:39 PM that is great Posted by: jilli at May 31, 2006 5:09 PM this guys just a hater Posted by: mark at June 1, 2006 8:46 PM The song Promiscuous is ok. It almost sounds like she's trying to hard to sound "cool" or "hood" (can't realy explain it). Especially in the part of the song where she says something like "don't be mad, don't be mean". (or was it get mad?) Posted by: yesterday at June 9, 2006 11:24 AM She was freestyling, in contests in Toronto, before her first album ever came out. Hip Hop is a part of her roots. Trust Timbaland to know what he's doing on this one. Posted by: init2 at June 13, 2006 8:47 PM Yea ok "Hip Hop is a part of Nelly Furtados roots" peace the fuck out... word to all your mothers!! Posted by: Nelly Furtarded at June 15, 2006 1:39 PM LMAO Posted by: ulysses at July 12, 2006 2:42 PM Get real! Hip hop doesn't equal gangster. Hip hop roots wasn't about killing your fellow man so maybe the haters should get informed and chill. If you were really in the know about how Nelly started out, you'd know she was in a hip hop group, won in hip hop contest and did some work with a hip hop group AND first love is R&B and hip hop. Is that enough info for you? Now go do your own homework her musical roots. Posted by: Li at July 13, 2006 4:58 PM Both of Nelly's previous cds have a hip hop undertones in some songs and Nelly already knew how to write rap and do rap for a long time. Haven't you seen or heard her in several Missy Elliot appearances or with other rappers or even on her own cds. Timbaland wanted to work with her since before he met her. Missy Elliot wanted her do rap and sing on her stuff and the list goes on. I don't like her going overboard in acting all sexy and stuff and wearing SO much make up that she hardly even looks like herself but it was bound to happen since she's been encouraged SO much and been alot around girls(Miami) who are like that alot. Timbaland said he really pushed her to be more like that. He also said he and Nelly had disagreements about it and he he thinks she so sexy but still isn't acting as sexy as he thinks she should. She's obviously been heavily influenced so it's a part of how she is now. Her friends and family don't seem to be objecting so it's just going to stay a part of who she is now. The girl is so friggin talented though and she can sing or rap. Posted by: Lisa at July 13, 2006 5:46 PM yab Posted by: ghamdan at July 18, 2006 6:44 AM All I know is, there's a reason Esthero wrote that track "O.G. Bitch"...and what a coincidence that Nelly changed up her style drastically, right after that. Things that make ya go hmmmm.... Posted by: starrkist614 at August 19, 2006 1:22 AM What a load of crap! Nelly Furtado rapping!! That's like Jennifer Lopez singing 'On the 6'and saying those were her 'musical roots'. Musical roots, my foot. Posted by: jarand at August 20, 2006 2:44 PM Do any of you understand what hip hop actual is???? Do you actually think this new shit of Nelly Furtado's is classified as hip hop???? Unfortunately, for all you spoiled white kids in the suburbs reading this....it's not....it's completely mainstream rap. I'll admit her first album did have a hip hop feel to it and she has roots with hip hop....more like she had roots with hip hop...but this Promiscuous shit....It's trash. She's now become another Britney Spears wannabe....a disposable hero, probaly within 5 years. I prefer TRUE hip hop cause it doesn't have to be so flashy, has socially conscious lyrics, and is very introspective. Wow...much like the album "Whoa, Nelly?"...Im not saying she should sing about birds and corny shit, but she has clearly sold her soul to the roundtable of corporate devils. How come when people in the past sold out they never changed their style(e.g. Marvin Gaye, Rolling stones, beatles, etc.) they just developed it? Nobody ever got upset about sell outs then. Hip Hop could really help people move on and get out of the ghetto, while TRUE rap, it just keeps them at a standstill because all of its subject matter is malicious, instead of healing. And as for all this "white" mainstream shit....It's gonna probaly lead to a rise in unplanned births and have veneral diseases wiping out half of the nation. Grow up people...Do you still listen to music that sound like it came from your high school dance???? If this your case, I honestly feel really bad for you then.... Posted by: BtotheRtotheAtotheD at September 1, 2006 7:27 PM Nelly is hot..and quite frankly shes a great artist..she could sing country and pull it off...so quit being so critical all you Debbie Downers"and just appreciate her talent.and by the way..did i mention she was hot.. Posted by: Gomer at September 4, 2006 11:26 PM Nelly...do what you do what you do Girl! All y'all stop hating! Her CD is off the chain--this is coming from another diva! Posted by: Gigi at September 22, 2006 3:06 AM What do you mean UNDERSTAND what hip hop is??? Just because you feel hip hop equals positivity or underground doesn't mean peeps who think like you are the only judges of what "real" hip hop is. Music evolves and eventually becomes mainstream. I bet 20 years ago we wouldn't be able to hear the hip hop music that's under the "pop" or mainstream radio umbrella even at night, never mind the day. The big names like Snoop, Dre, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Mary J etc who've been in the game since they were kids and are played on mainstream radio and topped the pop charts would disagree with people who try to define some hip hop as fake. Heavy Gangsta rap is still not a heavy part of mainstream radio so I guess by some people's definition that is the only real rap today. Posted by: Hip hop lover at September 24, 2006 9:22 AM People also have to realize that lyrics are like movies-- some are a form of escapism that's not meant to be imitated, and some are socially conscious and some are just based on everyday experiences. Even innovators who've been in the game of rap/hip hop, indie, heavy metal or whatever for a long time are not so interested in making socially conscious music. Sometimes people just wanna hear flirty, brag, sexy vibes to take their mind off the pressure of their real world. If they want their voices to be heard or pay attention to serious issues they can get active through other media like socially conscious magazines, TV, radio, school, rallies whatever. At least let music be without the whole stupid color boundaries. To get back to the Nelly Furtado topic, she's nothing close to a stranger to hip hop and she has never claimed herself to be white although some people have called her white. She's always said she's Latin and that she in fact felt very much at home in Miami because she was among many other Latinas that shared the same physical make up as her as well as the same culture as her. I'm sure Mariah Carey wouldn't want people to ignore her own ethnicity because some people choose to see her as a white girl which she isn't. And even if a musician was white, Asian, African, Latin, Indian or everything, why give a damn what music they want to do if doesn't include persecuting others through words or action? I recall reading that Jimi Hendrix is pretty much the father of hard rock music yet certain musician will get mocked for making rock music or for straying from rock music. People of same ethnicity are still busy killing each other off or cutting each other down yet they point fingers at people who ain't staying in the box that was stupidly assigned to them at birth.
