Katie Couric anchors a prime-time special tonight at 9 titled “Katie Couric’s All Access Grammy Special” (WCBS/2) that will feature interviewswith andprofiles of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Lil Wayne. Last week, she anchored a prime-time edition of “Evening News,” an industry first. And this Sunday, she has the get of gets - Flight 1549 captain Chesley Sullenberger and crew. Outtakes will air on Friday’s “Evening News.” Why so much Katie?

To an extent, serendipity and hard work. Couric and Lori Beecher - a longtime colleague at NBC News who jumped to CBS with her - booked the “Sully” interview on their own, employing a well-baited hook with “60 Minutes.” Meanwhile, CBS and Couric also are looking at the big mo. She built it during the political season, with the Sarah Palin interviews. While once-battered “Evening News” and its once-battered anchor are growing, “EN” numbers are up year over year about 5 percent, for an average 7 million viewers. CBS doesn’t want to squander those hard-fought gains. Explains “EN” executive producer Rick Kaplan, “We just think the more people get a chance to see her, the better.”
