Gary Papa, 54, was a veteran Philadelphia Sportscaster. He died Friday night after battling prostate cancer for several years. After spending almost three decades covering sporting news in Philly, he acquired an impressive legion of fans. During Papa’s battle a Facebook group dedicated to him sprang up, and now many of his followers are using it as a method to show their condolences.

Sportscaster for NBC 10, John Clark, and good friend of Papas shared his remorse, saying:

“Gary Papa was one of the best people you could ever meet. We became good friends and he was my mentor”.

Then he went on to say:

“There will never be another Gary Papa. He made all of our lives better.”

Gary Papa Biography

He was born on September 2, 1954. He was best known for being a sportscaster for WPVI-TV, which is located in Philadelphia, since he joined the station in 1981. He was the co-host of the public affairs show “Primetime Weekend” together with Cecily Tynan. He took the hosting job after the death of Jim O’ Brien.

He shared the bad news with his audience that he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, and that he was balding as a result in April of 2004. He kept on working throughout his chemotherapy treatment. In July of 2007, he revealed on the 6:00 PM Action News broadcast alongside Jim Gardner that he was undergoing chemotherapy once again.

Papa’s house located in Saint Davids, Pennsylvania is an unofficial landmark of Radnor Township, according to wiki. Many tourists and Philadelphians alike have visited his home.

Gary Papa Died on June 19, 2009, at 2:57 pm, at age 54, while admitted at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He leaves behind his wife, Kathleen Papa, and his two sons Nathaniel and Tucker.
