Music Pirate Jammie Thomas-Rasset ,000 Per Song Fine!

Wow, if you use Kazaa, maybe you should start saving now. Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a mother from Minnesota, was sued by the RIAA for being an alleged music pirate. It was the first case of its kind to actually make it to trial, and the potential damages awarded to the RIAA could total .92 million. For the 24 songs in question, it adds up to a fine of roughly ,000 per song.

When asked whether she could pay the fine, Jammie Thomas-Rasset simply said:

“There’s no way they’re ever going to get that. I’m a mom, limited means, so I’m not going to worry about it now.”

According to reports, the Recording Industry Association of America doesn’t think they’ll see the .92 million either. It is believed that music pirate Thomas-Rasset will actually end up settling with the RIAA for a much smaller fine of ,000 to ,000.

This isn’t the first time that Jammie Thomas-Rasset was sued for being a music pirate by the RIAA. A previous lawsuit filed against her in 2007, ended in a mistrial because of a technicality. That allowed for the case to be retried, which ultimately resulted in this week’s ruling.

What do you think, is an ,000 per song fine too outrageous? Is the RIAA out of line, or are they simply protecting copyrighted material from music pirates? Let us know in the comments section below.
