Protein shakes & Consumer Reports: Yikes

Protein shakes have become a basic part of anyone's diet who is serious about woorking out, especially if they are weight training and hoping to bulk up and build muscle while losing fat. But are there health risks with these shakes and protein powers that people don't know about?

According to a Consumer Reports report that they reported, reportedly, taking too many protein drinks can increase your risk of osteoporosis, and possibly cause kidney problems. And there may be unsafe levels of certain things like lead, if you are taking multiple servings a day. Muscle Milk and myoplex are two of the most popular brands , and both came out as having possible issues.

to be fair though, an expert quoted said: "The results of this analysis aren't alarming. The heavy metals that were found are well below the limits FDA (Food and Drug Administration) would be concerned about, so they don't pose a health risk to consumers at all."

I personally have protein shakes on days that I work out at the gym and light weights, and usually prefer the Labrada "Lean Body" brand of shake, which I've read is healthy. I've never had any bad experiences. Also the "Oh Yeah" shakes on occasion, and muscle milk when I can't find those. For more details on the consumer reports study see below.

For many people trying to get in shape or bulk up quickly, protein shakes are part of a daily workout regime. Protein drinks are being advertised as a way to boost fitness, and that marketing targets everyone from body builders to teenagers. But, according to a new study, over-consuming some of those products could be dangerous. "Early Show" Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen takes a look at an investigation being released Monday by Consumer Reports. Though manufacturers and salesmen say that these products are safe, the new study says some protein drinks may cause health problems over time. The investigation found some contain things like arsenic, cadmium, and lead.
