Data Points to Slow But Steady Economic Rebound


As America continues to struggle through this recession and work towards recovery, experts say the data points to slow (but steady) economic rebound in the months and years to come. But is the emphasis on the slow, or the steady? Depends who you ask.

Economists say the soaring jobless rates show employers are hesitant to hire even though signs of economic recovery have appeared. And data points to factories having trouble returning to their previous levels of productivity, even as demand starts to increase.

What does this mean in the long term? Consumer spending and some other indicators have starting improving, but the prospects for a quick and thorough economic rebound are looking quite grim. For more details see below:

Discouraging new reports on unemployment and manufacturing Thursday reinforced worries that job losses and meager factory output will make for a weak recovery as the nation climbs out of the worst recession in decades. "The economy is not moving quickly from recession to expansion. It is moving in a very halting way," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com.
