October 13, 2009Emotional Toll of Recession
Everyone is aware of the financial toll of this recession that's been hammering Americans, but studies say there's also a very real emotional toll to the recession, that can affect our mental and physical health as we struggle to make ends meet. According to business week, "the economic downturn could lead to higher crime, divorce, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, and suicide" as the stress of dealing with unemployment, debt and other financial hardship became impossible to bear. If you are in this position, please think about using the many free resources out there like save.org, and get some help so you can keep your head up and make it through this! The best therapy for what ails us is grassroots action. Forget about tea parties, marches, petitions and pointless letters to congressmen. We need a federal tax revolt. Everybody pay your federal taxes to your state. Corporate taxes, personal income taxes, the whole nine yards, pay it to your state. Last April 15th, my husband and I paid our 2008 federal income taxes to our home state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin cashed the checks without question and we have yet to hear from the IRS, though I'm sure we will. If every American who is fed up with government waste and policies that cause economic turmoil would do what we did, it would send a powerful message to Congress and the president: They work for us, not us for them. And what are they going to do about millions of taxpayers who decided to keep their federal tax dollars at home? Nothing! Come on, do you really think anybody in Washington cares about us? They don't, never did and probably never will unless we stand up and do the one thing they always hoped we'd never have the guts to do. Lose your fear of government. Don't wait for change, BE the change! Posted by: Heather Czerniak at October 16, 2009 4:18 AM I think these feelings steam from the non-researched, non-factual, and mostly biased information we get from talking heads from cable television and syndicated talk radios. After a person listens to these rants and raves that are mostly biased, depending on what political spectrum a person is interested in, it's easy to come away feeling intense and need to blame people. Someone who has lost their job is already stressed about how to make ends meet, taking dubious advice from talking heads with no knowledge and/or factual helpful information besides blame, can easily send a person who is already stressed into deeper negative feeling.
