Edgar Allan Poe Funeral!

Edgar Allan Poe died 150 years ago this year, but he's still never gotten a proper funeral! But the city of Baltimore, where he died is about to change that.

Poe died under mysterious circumstances at te age of 40, suddenly appearing in Baltimore stricken both physically and mentally and too inchoherent to explain what had happened to him. A week alter he died, but his family never sent out the word to the public that he had passed, so his funeral had almost nobody there.

But in 2009 Baltimore's Edgar Allan Poe funeral will finally go out in the grand fashion he deserves. Injustive to Poe? Nevermore! Sorry, I had to.

For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died....

The math is not very good here. If he was born 200 years ago and died when he was forty years old, he must have died 160 years ago.

I would like to know what the above people do for a living. None must be able to do math, nor able to do research on the internet. Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849. So basic math indicates it is 200 years since his birth and 160 years since his death. It is too easy to sit back and critcize others, but let us srcutinze your work and see how perfect you are.

In complete adoration of all things E.A.Poe and have been for over 40 years. I've seen images of the Poe site in Baltimore and consider the times are ripe for the adoration of a soul who was lost in life and hopefully freed in death. The memory of him lives!

Wonder if he is the same guy that gives him a bottle of whiskey each year on his birthday?

This article stinks. Of course what do you expect when you aren't paid?

The movie Terror Tales starring Vincent Price re-enacts three of Poe's most famous tales.

I am a writer working here in Baltimore and would love to channel a little of his opiatic inspiration. I will have to settle for some cannabis and vodka. Think I will go to the funeral tomorrow.

Is this for Edgar, or just for publicity? Maybe they should think about changing "Baltimore" to "Nevermore" in his honor.

I'm sure Edgar would roll over in his new grave if he had the opportunity to evaluate the literacy of those commenting...If you want to decry the erudition of others, it pays to have a grasp of basic spelling and sentence construction.

Cheers, you ignorant bastards.

Actually his writings were not famous at the time of his death and that might have been why his cousin, Neilson Poe, did not announced his death publicly. So less than 10 people attended his funeral. However I am surprised that this event was decided on. What I'm wondering is where is the catch? It feels more like a publicity stunt than a dedicated memorial for him. I see there is to be a "gothic theme" for this event. to me it seems almost like a party rather than a funeral for his honor. I wonder what Edgar would think of all of this...

2+2=4, 1+1=2,200-160=40

Before posting an angry comment about the poor spelling, grammar, mechanics, and bad information, one should always confirm that they are correct. Poe was born January 19, 1809, which makes this the 200th anniversary of his birth. He died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, which is 160 years ago.
Perhaps information like this is not common knowledge, but my ninth grade students know to confirm details and proofread before submitting any writing.

Ok, I've read all of these posts. Give the original post a break. Ok so they should have said "died over 150 years" and "later" instead of "alter". We should be discussing Poe's work and his life and not critique someone's post.
So I ask, what is your favorite work by Poe? I liked Eureka.

To all of you who are so despetately and ignorantly criticizing the article above, why don't you find something better to do with your poor writing skills than take up space blogging just because you can. Go to school! The point of this article is to celebrate Edgar Allen Poe, not your poor excuse for writing. Quit blogging and get a job!
