Matt Carson Home Run Ball: $10,000?

Matt Carson hit his first home run this week, but he won't get to keep the home run ball, thanks to a greedy fan who demanded $10,000 for it!

Traditionally when a baseball fan catches a home-run ball at the stadium and the player would like to have it, the fan gets to exchange it for a signed bat and/or other such memorabilia, but in this case, the unnamed and unprincipled man who caught the home run ball refuses to give itup for anything less than $10,000. So Matt Carson is letting this greedy nincompoop keep the ball and eat it, while keeping the bat he used as his own souvenir.

It's one thing to demand money for a historic home run ball ball hit by a wealthy all-star, but Matt Carson is not rich at all, and was in the minor leagues most of his life. So as far as I'm concerned whoever this fan is needs to learn a thing or two about class.

Matt Carson Home Run Ball: $10,000?

A's outfielder Matt Carson smashed his first big league home run last week, but encountered some trouble when he tried to retrieve the ball from a fan.... Bay Area news reports had the unidentified fan seeking $10,000 for the ball. Carson instead settled for keeping the bat used to hit it....

why doesnt a "wealthy all-star" on Matt Larsons team fork over the money? The fan is probably struggling like the rest of us,just trying to make ends meet,

Posted by: jp at September 28, 2009 4:25 AM

The Oakland A's have no wealthy all-stars on their roster. The team is made up of rookies, journeymen and veterans past their prime. This isn't NY or LA or even SF. We here in Oakland are working class people just like the A's players. But guys like the ungrateful jerk who's demanding 10k for the ball is giving us a bad rep. Be glad we even have a ball club here in the eastbay.

Matt, congrats on the homer. If you think your first homer is worth only a cheap bat and signed ball. Guess what, its not. Its worth 10,000 dollars. If its so sentimental, offer something more than the usual bat and ball. Nothing at a ballpark is cheap. Compare your special ball to a hotdog and soda, and you can see how 10,000 is not that rediculous.

Posted by: Ron Owen at September 28, 2009 6:39 AM

It's amazing what people come up with to rationalize their own greed. The loser trying to extort 10k for the ball and then the couple weak people here defending him. I suppose the defenders are just envious that they didn't get the ball as I'm sure the price tag would have been similar. Baseball is a game! This was a big moment for Matt Carson, not for all of baseball, just Matt Carson. Often big leaguers are criticized for loosing site of what the game is all about. Looks like some fans are as well.

Posted by: Mike at September 28, 2009 6:57 AM

To Bill Lee and Ron Owen, you two are are both huge jokes! I bet you are friends of the extortionist and want part of the payday! He has earned the right to get that ball back. You two are whats is wrong with society. Always wanting something for nothing! To the so called fan and these two idiots, I hope that your family and friends realize what sad and pathetic human beings you are and disown you.

Hey the guy caught the ball and its his to do whatever he wants. why is it ok for the ballpark to charge outrageous prices for tickets, food, and drink? i would charge more than 10,000. and for the dope that called the A's "working class players" give me a break. They see more money in 3 months of work than most do in a lifetime.

"why doesnt a "wealthy all-star" on Matt Larsons team fork over the money? The fan is probably struggling like the rest of us,just trying to make ends meet"

You make it sound like the fan's entitled to something for being lucky. The fan did nothing, it was the ball players accomplishment. The fam should man up, and stop being stupid.

Posted by: CBS at September 28, 2009 10:03 AM

This comment is more for Matt Carson than for all the idiots out ther that defendered the action of this extortionist. The event will be forever recorded, there's not denying it happened, whether the actual ball is ever retrived should be incidental to the accomplishment, Carson knows he did it, thousands of fans know he did it, get another ball, put it on you mantle and be done with it. Tell the jerk to shove it were the sun don't shine

Posted by: Anonymous at September 28, 2009 10:36 AM

In todays climate, the price you pay for tickets to a game, the price of food and the ridiculous demands players make. I do not think the fan is being that far off. When players such as Hanley Ramirez would not sign a autograph in the minors, because he says he is under contract. How about the wonderful Tim Beckham who does not like to sign autographs and will tell you so. If he does sign a autograph for you he will smudge it or sign things that are not ledgable.

These are just a few of my experiences and I get autographs all over the country and as a whole players are great but a few ruin it for kids and adults because they are such pricks...with all of the money they make even at the lowest pay in the majors is far above the average mans wages. So I think the players should be happy to sign a autographs for fans.

Another Such item I want to mention is A-Rod charges $250.00 to sign a baseball card. You cannot even sell it for half of that on the open market..But it comes down to greed for guys like that. As a fan we have to pay for his divorce, his plane, big homes, and his ego.....

What about players such as Hines Ward or Ben Rothlisberger charging $100,000 for a 2 hour Private signing and they dictate what items can and cannot be signed...

So what is the difference if a athelete wants a ridiculous price for something and a fan wants a ridiculous price for something...The players have set the tone not the fans...

So when a fan asks for something so far fetched maybe even a career minor league should understand.

Posted by: mike martin at September 28, 2009 10:55 AM

When you look at the average cost to bring a family of 4 to a major league baseball game I think the price is right in line. 10k would hardly cover the cost of a luxury suite for 1 game in Oakland with catered food and drink. Yet every game many of these suites remain empty. Matt could have had his ball and bat if the owners wanted to step up. Instead they are taking advantage of Matt and the Media around this event with all of the hype about the fan. It's a business get over it.

RE:JP's comment-
"why doesnt a "wealthy all-star" on Matt Larsons team fork over the money? The fan is probably struggling like the rest of us,just trying to make ends meet"

if the fan was struggling then why would he be at a baseball game in the first place where everything is over priced?

What's great about America is that everyone has an opinion about everything! A homerun ball? From when I was a kid I wanted to play MLB! Oh well, I didn't! If I caught the homerun ball from ANYONE I'd keep it as I never caught a MLB Homerun ball before. Also I'd ask for $25,000, what the hell! Let ME bat! It just looks like that FAN IS at BAT! Play ball and Bean em'!

Posted by: SCARDINI at September 28, 2009 11:37 AM

It is just sad, or maybe funny..people complaining about the cost of tickets then don't go, how is that the players fault, the cost of hotdogs dont buy it,are we really blaming people for our poor choices, clear case of greed, lucky catch it's his ball, an opportunity for a nice gesture he chose not to but he could have had an autographed "something" all he has is a blank ball ( Hilarious) Matt has the memory. It's ashamed that there are fans no people out there who believe they have a right to dictate Matt's money. Just like the ball belongs to the idiot who caught it Matt has a right not to pay for a ball that really did nothing but fly through the air. Too many people walk around thinking that people who have money owe them something because they don't have when I am sure they wasted many opportunities to succeed financially

try to make me feel bad for a pro ball player, no way. if carson ever makes it big in baseball just watch the gerrd take over, from salary demands, travel demands to demands for payment just to sign a ball or card. if the guy who cought the ball is lucky enough to hang on to it maybe he can make even bigger demands if carlson does make it big time

Posted by: bill lee at September 28, 2009 12:10 PM

all of these childish behaviors that you see from professional atheltes in the big four sports (Football, Hockey, Baseball and Basketball) are the reasons I go to professional Lacrosse games. This is truly a working man's sport - the pros work DAY jobs (cops, teachers, etc) in order to make ends meet as they are not making enough money playing lacrosse to suppport their families. They do have another item in their favor, I have never, ever, even at an all star game, met a pro lacrosse player with the attitude of A-Rod, Carmello Anthony, or any other big name player. They will sign autographs at any time for anyone, and take the time to talk to kids, and appreciate their fan base. NLL fan for life!

Posted by: momjill at September 28, 2009 12:11 PM

Isn't the guy now stuck with an UNSIGNED ball? How will he ever prove it was Carson's homerun ball? Stop talking about this and move on to something important.

Posted by: nay at September 28, 2009 12:35 PM

Everyone continues to whine about how much pro ball players make. They make money because they add value to a company. This is the same in any buisness. There is a value placed on your job by what it adds to the companies bottom line. The teams would not pay if they were not making twice as much in return. I do not know a single person who would turn down more money in there current job. The lacrosse players you brag on would gladly switch places with any of the big four to make millions. If they say thay wouldn't they are either lying or stupid. For every crappy attitude you find in sports you will find 10 more that are good and generous people. There are many who give thousands to charities of all kinds.

I wouldn't give that greedy bastard a dime, and I don't think any of his teammates should ether.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 28, 2009 1:13 PM

If Carson (or someone on his behalf) pays $10,000 for the ball, THAT will become the 'going price'. No more signed bats or balls... it will be $10,000 and up. Can you imagine the carnage in the stands if fans grappled with one another to come up with every $10,000 homerun ball??? It wouldn't be pretty.

Baseball is a gentleman's game, a sandlot game, a game for heros to inspire children. A game for dreamers. The fan's greed ranks him up there with the wallstreet players, men like Madoff. He sets a fine example for children. One thing, for the rest of his life he can look back at his 5 minutes of fame and know the kind of fool he was and that baseball citizens will look back in time to his moment and see him for what he is!

Posted by: Foxfire at September 28, 2009 1:51 PM

the fan is a stuck up greedy punk. what if somebody took a valuable thing from him and put a price tag on it? he wouldnt like it and he would go crying like a lil punk. This baseball player worked his life and soul off in trying to make it to the bigs. and to all those sayin that oo he's in the bigs he's rich. thers no guarantee that he's gonna be rich. Its a struggle every day to keep your job. working out every day, going to the ball park. traveling over the country away from your family, it takes a toll on you. so this punk should fess up the ball and be a normal person.the owners are not greedy, yes the ticket prices may be high and food but they worked their @$$es off for the job and money and you people are being jelous? maybe if u stopped sucking ur thumbs in high school and actually tried instead of sitting around you maybe a doctor or something of the sorts and get a decent pay.

"thanks to a greedy fan who demanded $10,000 for it"
Oh really? What about the greedy players who make people stand in line at book or sporting goods stores making people PAY to have a baseball signed by their favorite player. Some players demand as high as $25.000.00 or more up front to show up at a ball signing event. If the event doesn't get enough people during the ball signing, they're just out the cash. But not the player!

On top of all that, last year in the 2008 season the league MINIMUM was $390,000.00 or $7500.00 a week! What is it this year? $420,000.00 a year?

Posted by: Gerold at September 28, 2009 1:57 PM

We have a minor league team just down the road from here. These guys are not wealthy, but they do like to play baseball, unfortunately, these players can't always pay their bills with their "love" of the game. Their wives and children support and back them up daily. They maybe in the minor leagues for a year or maybe even 10 years and never get moved up to the majors. And they when one does get moved up and hits his first homerun, the fan says "Gimme de money". The tradition that goes back over 100 years has now become tarnished and may come to an end. That sacred link between the players and the fans has just been broken. What happens if the leagues start erecting screens all the way around the fields just to prevent these obscene instances of greed and dishonor from occuring. The cost of honor is $10,000.00

Posted by: Foxfire at September 28, 2009 2:04 PM

atleast he has the bat, all the years of working hard in the minors has paid off for him. Matt ur a grown man getting to play a game for work that only these goof ball dream of, who cares if he has ur ball. u have the game, they dont, remember its just a game and u are one of the lucky few that get to do it for a living. congrads on the homer and screw the haters. ur living ur dream!

Posted by: Robert at September 28, 2009 2:23 PM

Good for the fan! Fans have been taking it in the shorts for too long now. At the least, Carson is making the MLB minimum of $400,000 - probably a lot more than the fan. The fan OWNS the ball, and a player wants it. Let him pay what the fan asks, or let the fan keep it.

Posted by: Mike Acquilano at September 28, 2009 2:36 PM

Forget the fan! I can't blame him for wanting the money. In these hard times, I'm surprised that so many Americans attend the ballpark with the high cost of tickets, food, and etc.
If Matt wants the ball so bad, then the owner Walter Haas, who probably has more money than god, can afford to pay $10,000, then write it off as a Business Expense.

Like someone else suggested.......should have offered to exchange it for a new ball autographed and tickets.

Now the news about this is so big, he could probably get more money off of ebay.

I hope the fan gets a premium price from the idiot who is willing to buy it!

Sports are not important, yet millions treat them like they are.

Wow.....such a difference in opinion. What I would like to do is charge my old bicycle complete with clothes pins for using up my Marris, Mantle, and Babe Ruth baseball cards to make it sound like a motorcycle.
As time went by I actually worked for Mickey Mantle. I smiled at him on one of the two times I met him and asked him to sign my paycheck which at the time would have meant that his signature would have been worth about 18K more than my paycheck. He said no and also smiled. 9 holes of golf with him was better than the signature.
I have memories, I have "stuff" that no money could or would provide.
I seriously doubt that the payoff would make this guy like baseball any better. Might buy a few more beers but the actual joy of having a little legacy in the game is worth a whole lot more.

Posted by: Bobby L at September 28, 2009 3:34 PM

First of all congats too Matt Carson, secondly, times are hard but not so hard that idiots have to try to bleed other people dry to get rich quick, yes baseball players are payed way to much, so is every other athlete, so are ticket prices, the right thing to do you immature idiot, give him his ball, put your self in his shoes idiot, would you want someone to charge you 10k for your first homer, i dont think you would, grow some morales and do the right thing, and i wouldnt blame matt carson if he didnt trade you anything for giving him his first homer.

Posted by: eric eskew at September 28, 2009 3:36 PM

did anyone ever try to get an autograph from a player? they never seem to have the time ,unless your paying for that signature .if he wants the ball let the owner who charges us unreasonable rates to see the game pay for it .i've been to 22 stadiums and will never give a ball back to a player .i would rather throw it out than give to the greedy players .

Posted by: bill lawless at September 28, 2009 3:49 PM

Well it is like everything else it is a mento for the player as well as the spectator. But to want $10000.00 for a ball that is not signed he only has a base ball and his word. The player has the bat and it can be signed and it means something

Posted by: roycepartrick at September 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Posted by: streek at September 28, 2009 4:00 PM

Its bad enough for players to get paid what they are paid, but when fans try to extort money from players that is not right. Had this been a historic home run maybe you could sell it for some cash but being it this guys first HR give him the ball and get a autographed bat or ball or both but 10 grand for a rookies 1st homerun? Give me a break. To get that you will have to hold on to it until the guy retires and hopefully did something special during his career. Everyone seems to want something for nothing let him eat that ball.....

Why do all of you side with the greedy millionaires over Joe Fan who is paying their over inflated salaries? Hold that ball fan! You are a hero!

Posted by: Mike Acquilano at September 28, 2009 5:12 PM

The team, in fact all teams, should make it a policy to purchase this type of "historic" ball from fans. If they can afford to pay millions in salaries they surely can afford $10,000 to make a player happy and enrich a fan. An actual benefit to the fans for buying a ticket.

Posted by: Jim at September 28, 2009 5:32 PM

I don't think $10,000 is unreasonable given the lowest entry level salary in MLB is $400K a year!!!! That would be like a common working person paying $100 dollars for it. What's the matter Matt??? can't get by on your remaining $390,000 salary??

see then the public would've been mad at the greedy baseball players. BUT the media didn't tell them to be mad at the players...they told the fans to be mad at the "Greedy" fan
you can follow public reaction based on the headlines... media hates bush YOU hate Bush...media likes Obama- YOU like Obama lol
Put up a net like the NFL then NONE of the balls will go in the crowd.
new disclaimer on tickets:"all balls hit into the crowd are the sole property of MLB any use without the express written consent of MLB constitutes theft and is punishable by 25 years in prison. Enjoy The GAME

"Sport" became "industry" long ago and there's little left of the sporting traditions that reiterated to our children the sense of fair play. While I believe that all sports costs and salaries are obscene, it's a shame that the fan couldn't have been the better man (or just "A" man) and returned the ball in accordance with tradition. This would have taught his own son a lesson more valuable than any on the field.

Posted by: Keith V. at September 28, 2009 7:04 PM

From many of the comments I have read, It's sad to see how many of you have forgotten what our great game is all about. If you have ever played or coached the game beyond the "babe Ruth" level, you really start to learn the "real game"! There are many unwritten rules in our game directed to the honor and integrety of the players, their teamates and fans. It would have been an honorable gesture to offer the ball back for a small exchange, at the discretion of the player. We make the choice to go see a ballgame. We choose to pay the price for the tickets. What we expect for our price of addmission is to see our favorite team play hard and try to beat their opponent. Anything else is a bonus. If you expect more than that..than I question why are you there? Keep the honor in our game..because it is our great pastime.

You have to be kidding me!!! The sport has already been tarnished like all pro sports and yet you idiots keep on going to the game just like falling for these politicians promises. This is no longer a gentlemens game. The sports are all about greed. We do not even know the story. What if this so called fan had been paying and going to this game for a long time and just caught his first homerun ball and then someone approached him to give the ball up and he did not want to and felt that if it was that important to them then this is what I want. Whats wrong with that? Where does it say as a fan that if you catch a ball you have to give it back as a curtisy? Ridiculous!! Or what if this fan saved money his whole life just to make it to a game and was lucky enough to catch a homerun ball? I sure would not have given it up. I like to see these guys play and have been lucky enough to have enough for a ticket maybe three times in my life to see our Cardinals. This country is going to hell in a hand basket and this is all so ridiculous. The fan probably did not want to give it up and if he would he put a price on it and rightfully so.

Ahhhhhhh!! Stop your crying you bunch of Lacys!!! The guy caught the ball which makes it his. Rules of the game right. So if he wants to put it where the sun don't shine or sell it for 10gs what the hell you care. In the end, it's the gentlemans ball. Though I believe the writter of this article would prefer he keep it where the sun don't shine. lol!!!

Probably needed to feed his family after being out of work and was lucky enough to have a friend take him to the game to help get him out of his depression and was lucky enough to catch a homerun ball.

I've been an MLB fan for 28 yrs. I do not feel that fan is wrong, not at all. What's the difference if it's a $500,000.00 HR record breaking ball. Or $10,000.00 first HR ball. It is simply a sports collectable. Suck it up, Matt. Welcome to "The Big Show".If anyone of you say the fan was wrong. Let's see what you would do, if you caught that $500,000.00 ball. Would you just hand it over for an autograph. No, I didn't think so.

the stupid guy is a jerk he knows that the ball he caught is something that rightfully Matt carsons even though the guy caught the ball he should give it back and settle for a jersey, bat or signed bal instead of wanying 10 dollars for it. people like him are the kind of people that ruin the fun for everyone because he's greedy.

I actually don't think that's so outrageous. My dad always said that "baseball is a sport where guys get paid millions to do something they would do for next to nothing". Looking at the A's paycheck page they all make at least $400,000 a year ... not bad for playing a game.
This sport has been milking the fans and taxpayers for years now, consider Citi Field in my home town of New York. The players get millions, the owners get big money from Citibank for the right to put their name on the front and Citibank gets bailed out my ME ... the honest taxpayer. And if I don't pay my taxes I go to jail. Do I get a portion of the proceeds?
Not fair.
I say sell the ball on E-Bay.

Quit bitching about the fan wanting to cash in on his good luck. If you want to end this sort of thing make it a condition of attendance at all games of any sort that all equipment is the property of the respective team or leaque and MUST be returned or theft charges will result.
This will piss off the memoribilia dealeras bet who cares.

That fan needs to be banned from the A's and go cheer on the Raiders as punishment.

There are 300,000,000 people who live in US. There are 750 players in majors, that means 1 player for every 400,000 people, not counting players from other countries. Ask yourself this question, does 1 person for every 400,000 in the general public make at least similar kind of money?
Would any of you clowns not play major league ball or not accept the dough if given the chance?
If you got the skills of 1 in 400k people you too can make the big whip!Unless you win the lottery or born into money the best have always made the most, that's the way it is. Stop whining and do something about your life then you won't worry about the price of a hotdog or a ticket to a ball game. But then the ones that whine the most will do the least!

Posted by: RICHARD FROM SEATTLE at September 28, 2009 9:12 PM

Hey Rich,
By the same token no one including a player should be whining about the price of a special baseball.

Posted by: cs at September 28, 2009 9:18 PM

This is free agency, only it's in the stands! Players love it when they cash in, but hate it when the average Joe cashes in. Can't have it both ways.

Posted by: Terry from Vegas at September 28, 2009 9:40 PM

lol most of these post scare me. The fan is entitled do with what he wants with the ball. The stadium makes an announcement prior to each game stating this. Then the fan has the right to do with his property as he wishes. So fan remember the next time you ask for an autograph or wonder why that player is an asshole?! Now you know why. Good luck America this society has serious issues.

Posted by: j kuyh at September 28, 2009 9:53 PM

These comments are rediculous. The fan should nkeep the ball and shove it up his ass! Carlson should then use his home run bat and slam his ass out of the park. Only in America, uh!!

Pay the Money

Posted by: philsfan at September 29, 2009 12:25 AM

Jeez people, proofread/spellcheck your comment(s) before you submit them; errors make you sound stupid, regardless of which side you take.

The ball belongs to the person who caught it, who can do with it whatever they choose. Carlson shouldn't even expect it back, he has the bat he used.

Posted by: Rose at September 29, 2009 12:55 AM

Here is my problem with half you idiots. The ones saying that the fan should give up the ball are right. $10,000 is outrageous to ask for a baseball. You can buy a brand new one at Academy for $11. Unfortunately, the fan and you people that are defending him all probably live in gov't housing and go to "Wal-Marts" and pay with food stamps. And you know who gets taxed out the A$$ so that you people can sit on ur A$$? It's these ballplayers. I don't think that the player has a "right" to the ball, but anyone who is a fan of baseball would love to see Matt get this home run ball. I'm afraid that most of the people posting only have a high school diploma, if that. He goes from being Carson to "Carlson" in the same post by Bill Lee. Then, "greed" gets spelled "gerrd." That is what is really wrong with this society today. You uneducated, ignorant sons a bi#$%es would rather sit at home and get supported by the gov't instead of learning something useful other than how to make meth out of pseudophedrine. Instead, you sit at home at hours where you should be WORKING and prove to everyone what dumbf@cks you are.

Hey! The Guy caught the ball...so it's his to do what he pleases with it. When professional ball players started asking for 25,50,100,200 dollars for autographs from kids that look up to them as heros...I lost respect for them. When MLB demanded that Little League Baseball fork over money to use real team logos on little kids uniforms.....I lost respect for MLB. Maybe the pros should come down to earth. Payback is a BEEEAAACH!

Posted by: John R.S. at September 29, 2009 1:00 AM

The guy that caught the ball isn't greedy, he's lucky and he decides if he wants to keep it or take a "lump sum" payment.

Maybe (for a price of course because it's his decision), the guy should give Carlson "visitation rights"???

Posted by: helene at September 29, 2009 1:20 AM

$$$$$ for nothing and your chicks for free.....give the poor shmuck the 10 grand. You make more in a week the the majority make in a year. As for the rest of you pro athelete lovers....you probably voted for change too.

Posted by: streek19 at September 29, 2009 1:25 PM

Streek19 you dumb@ss. The people that voted for change are the people that are worried about how much money baseball players make. Baseball fans know enough that the retard you people elected is what is causing other retards like this to think he can get 10 grand for a baseball.
