California Police Taser Legless Man in Wheelchair (VIDEO)

Many in California are asking whether local police went too far this week, with reports that they used a taser on a legless man in a wheelchair.

The police were investigating a domestic violence complaint, and say that the man, Gregory Williams was being uncooperative. But Williams insists he was unarmed and doing nothing to justify this treatment, in which he says he was also humiliated as he fell out of his wheelchair and was left handcuffed on the ground with his pants hanging down. Williams is Black and the officers are White but there's been no word on how race may be involved in the incident.

A lot of people have concerns about whether police are over-using tasers these days, and asking whether police arrest procedures need to be reformed with tighter regulations on when tasers are used, as seen from the California ACLU here and Amnesty International here.

Whatever the details turn out to be for this unarmed & legless man in a wheelchair getting tasered, I hope authorities wull continue to take a close look at how tasers can be properly used and not overused.

The Merced Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating whether an officer twice used a Taser on an unarmed, wheelchair-bound man with no legs. The man who was Tased, Gregory Williams, 40, a double-leg amputee, spent six days in jail on suspicion of domestic violence and resisting arrest, but the Merced County District Attorney's office hasn't filed any charges...

Considering that a Taser causes no permanent damage, and is a much gentler option than the officer's side arm, I prefer to give the officers the benefit of the doubt in this case. I worked in a men's prison for 6 and a half years, and I know that just because a man is in a wheel-chair or carries a cane does not mean he cannot assault and harm you.

Tasering has become a poor substitute for policing skills. A well-trained officer can manage such a situation without tasering.

Furthermore, how is it in the USA that a man can be held for SIX days without charges being filed against him? Have they no evidence? Clearly, the man needs a lawyer.

Posted by: Patricia at September 21, 2009 3:28 PM

Great another police abuse story. Why six (6) days on a suspicion of domestic violence, what did this guy do run over someone's foot with his wheelchair ? He should sue them just like Rodney King did (Los Angeles Ca.) Like this guy was going to out run the police in a wheelchair, another white cop beats up a black man story, never endless here in L.A.

If he was no danger then how did he assult the other person. It seems that if he can assult one, then he can resist arrest. What was the police person supposed to do except taser him?

I love that they put the race when it makes whites look bad, but they never put the race when it makes blacks look bad because only whites can be racist right!

if this cop did this a man without legs i hope they jam that taser up where the sun dont shine, also taser him twice.what was the man going to do ?run from the cop ? child please!you give police a bad name man. if the dude had a gun pointing at you differnat story.

Posted by: Fred mashburn at September 21, 2009 3:34 PM

If the healthy policeman felt he had to taser a man in a wheelchair with no legs, he either needs (1) more training (2) more backbone (3) more compassion (4) all four. That's about the most gutless act I've heard of in a long time. Maybe he shouldn't be a policeman after all; what's next, tasering babies in their strollers?

Posted by: G. Armstrong at September 21, 2009 3:35 PM

Start picking them off. Clearly, they have no value for human life. Why should you? To the post above, the fact that you say tasering does not cause damage..PLEASE educate yourself before posting FALSE information.

"Whether a TASER causes damage to a human body depends upon a lot of factors, such as how much current enters the body; where the current flows in the body; how much fat a person has in his body; and his physical size"

Posted by: Dane at September 21, 2009 3:35 PM

As stated, taser are not perminant in any way. If someone is resisting enough to potentially cause harm to the officer, why not?

If the man in the wheel chair (or anyone for the that matter) was not resisting while the officers were doing thier job, he wouldn't have been tased, right?

even a wheelchair running over the offivers foot and braking it would be worse than the effects of the taser...and we'd be paying for the officer to be out of duty while he healed.

Posted by: Bryan at September 21, 2009 3:36 PM

A taser is to protect the officer when his life is in danger, where was the danger? Arrest the officer for assault. Period.

Posted by: Criminal with a badge at September 21, 2009 3:36 PM

Well considering the next step in the use of force would be a sidearm, I can appreciate the officers use of the taser. I would guess that the area where they were located prevented them from engaging in the use of pepper spray. Police officers aren't perfect but neither are those that they deal with on a daily basis. My question would be, Why don't we see the articles plastered on the internet and newspapers when the police apprehend a killer, or a rapist? It's always the bad.......

Posted by: Angela at September 21, 2009 3:37 PM

This is rediculous, what is the guy gonna do, get up and run away? And the 6 days in jail; what happened to "innocent until proven guilty" and "fair and speedy trial"? As a side thought, "this unarmed & legless man" sounds rather bad.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 3:38 PM

I've heard of a one legged man in a ass whooping contest but a man w/ no legs? come on.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 3:39 PM

Pull down the pants of the officer. Give him twice the amount of the shots he gave the crippled man.
That should give him a good time.
He can't complain, and the matter will be closed.

Posted by: John Doe at September 21, 2009 3:41 PM

that is sad to Taser a man in a wheelchair what r they thinking. He was going to beat them up with his nubs...Shame on them there is no excuse for something like that to have happened. As a retired Police Officer no excuse can be made other then shame and the man was Black. How can u not control a man in a wheelchair? If this what Police work as come 2 glad I am no longer involved.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 3:46 PM

I think Rodney King has nothing to do with this! Nor does the color of any ones skin. Facts are the police are called for domestic situ. they have no idea what they're walking in to. Before anyone can cast judgement, they should walk into a domestic situ. and see a man (even in a wheelchair) beating his wife! What would you do? Let's let the police and legal system do their jobs, and not be judge and jury on something we obviously know nothing about!

Police are nothing more than criminals with badges. The pigs...errrr, police in Arapahoe county in colorado are among the worse most abusive, lying power hungry SOB's in the country. The probation department in arapahoe county is even worse. On-line diplomas - power crazy love to destroy lives - they are NOT there to help in any way but to abuse and break the spirits and lives of the people who end up in the system. They all will end up in hell for their sickening abuse. I hate them all (and I have never been in trouble a dqy in my life)

Posted by: lynn at September 21, 2009 3:47 PM

Domestic Violence? No disrespect for the disabled but what kind of domestic violence can someone in a wheel chair possibly due? Run you over or hit your ankles? The police were not in any danger unless there was a gun involved and that has not been said yet so i feel they went way over board on using the tasers. They should make the cops sit in a chair with their legs tied so they can feel what it is like to not have legs, the cops on them and then use the tassers on them. maybe it will stop then.

Posted by: brandy at September 21, 2009 3:47 PM

Everyone is stupid... any person can be dangerous to a officer. Whether they have a cane or are in a wheel chair. cops are out there to do there jobs. If they believe or have any suspicion about a suspect for any reason they can use the force that they believe is necessary to protect themselves and others around them. i do believe some cops abuse power but before we throw around a race card and they did abuse the power get all the facts before you all start ranting and raging. Why is the race card always pulled on everything... its annoying and people need to stop using it!

Posted by: anonymous at September 21, 2009 3:47 PM

Police are just scared of EVERYTHING now! Heck, where I live they just shot a 18 year cat twice with a shotgun that was already in a sack. Most police are such wimps nowdays.

Posted by: lvpower at September 21, 2009 3:48 PM

if people are stupid enough, and do not RESPECT an officer of the law...they get what they deserve...the problem today is people have all these loopholes, and police can do no right...if I ever talk back to a cop, then zap my dumba@%$ too....times have changed and police have a job to do..they are there to mediate, and a loud mouth cripple doesn't deserve any better treatment than you or I.

Posted by: tim at September 21, 2009 3:48 PM

Well, though this sounds quite terrible, I'd like to hear the officer's story. Who knows, maybe the legless man had a gun. There's a book I read recently, called "The whole truth" or something to that effect. It details the story (fictional I belive) of a kid who was "Suspended for patriotism", while in actuality he was actually just trying to cause trouble and in fact was disrespecting his country. However, the media only hears one side of the story, and runs with it.

Just sayin', it's best to be able to hear the whole story.

Posted by: Schilcote at September 21, 2009 3:49 PM

Of course, the race card has to be played. I have a brother who is a parapalegic and he can kick most peoples ass. Have you ever been hit by a removable arm rest from a wheelchair?

Posted by: Spitty at September 21, 2009 3:49 PM

I have to agree with the person who stated that if it was a black cop tazering a white person, no one would have yelled racist, and also I lost a very good friend a year ago to a taser incident. The cops didn't like my friend anyway, but they stopped him and tasered him 3 times. They later stated that he had pulled a knife on them, he Didn't even have a knife with him, his girlfriend found it on the dresser the next day.
Of course they got away with it and now a son is without a father and a woman is without her boyfriend, and I am without a good friend.
Tasering has gotten way out of hand!!!!!!

Posted by: karen at September 21, 2009 3:49 PM

To all you bleeding heart "hug-a-thugs" who have posted here; Find a worthy cause! I would bet any of you a paycheck that this guy is a drain on society with Hx of criminal activity. You pretentious pricks! Do you know the details of how bad he beat his seven year old daughter? or how many of the cans he was throwing hit his wife?
I dont either, but you are so quick to hang a cop who was responding to a DOMESTIC!!!!
Legs or not....live by societies rules, be productive and dont harm others or be treated like the scum you are!

Posted by: Michael P. at September 21, 2009 3:51 PM

I think we all need to know all the circumstances before judgement should be made on either part. Everyone has to remember that people in wheelchairs gain all their strength in their arms therefore could very well be dangerous. I have a uncles who is wheelchair bound and I definately would not want to be hit by him. There are also other dangers like spitting which could be deadly if the guy has Hepititis, TB or HIV. There is also the flip side where the adrenilin gets going too fast in an arresting officer. This is an issue that needs to be kept under control at all times. Get the facts!

Posted by: Julie at September 21, 2009 3:52 PM

Shame on these police officer's! if you can not control someone that is out of hand them YES taser them because it is better then shooting but honestly if these cops can not control someone in a wheel chair what makes anyone think that they can control someone with two legs. Maybe they need to reconsider there career with law inforcment.!!!!!

Posted by: Sam at September 21, 2009 3:53 PM

being in a wheelchair does not make you above the law. They should have billy clubbed him, then tasered him if we was uncooperative. I have never heard of a gentle, cooperative citizen being tazed.

Posted by: mike at September 21, 2009 3:57 PM

I would HOPE that the tasering was necessary to subdue the man, as tasering can be (and has been) lethal to someone with a heart condition. However, just because the man clearly couldn't run away, doesn't mean he wasn't out of control and capable of serious injury to another. Until more facts are known to the contrary, I have to assume that the police officer was acting appropriately. Not that they always do, after all, they are human, too. But the vast majority are honorable and courageous and will put their life on the line for a citizen--it's not a job of glamour and big bucks. And for those idiots that said to "shoot them", well, someone stupid enough to say that has probably gotten themselves in some trouble in their lives, and who did you call for help, or for justice? Yeah, that's what I thought, the police. Have a nice day.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 3:57 PM

Brian you must be a punk and a bully. A legless man in a wheelchair cannot assault anyone unless they have approached and deliberately put themselves in his range. With no legs he can't even throw a punch that would hurt a child. In case you are too damn dumb to read, you will see that several people have died from tasering recently. It is because of trash like you that we are now a police state, following almost exactly the path of Germany before ww2

Posted by: bill at September 21, 2009 3:57 PM

Well the police were called not to the man's birthday party, but someone was reportly in danger from this man in a wheelchair. I think we should take away the policemen's guns and any other form of self-protection. If we continue in this manner we will not have anyone to protect us and we will not be able to protect ourselves. You people would scream bloody murder if the man in the wheelchair entered your house and harmed or attempted to harm one of your loved ones. "WAKE UP."

Posted by: Anon at September 21, 2009 3:58 PM

The Taser should be shoved up the policeman's rear and turned on. The SOB should go to prision along with all his superiors. What a bunch of idiots we now have in law inforcement. Tasers should be outlawed and a criminal offense if used.

Thank You

Everyone keeps talking all this crap about the guy being in a wheelchair. What about the domestic violence charges? and the person who called the police in the 1st place.

Apparently the police and this person who called them felt like he was a threat. You think a man in a wheelchair has never killed or assulted someone.

I'm sure enough police officers could have handcuffed him w/o using their tasers. But what is going to happen when they get on the ground fighting and the guy grabs a gun and gets shot and killed. Then the story will be they had nonlethal weapons but didn't use them.

Of course he's saying he didn't do anything wrong. How many criminals jump up say "yes I did it" "I'm guilty"....maybe 5% tops. Almost every person in jail in innocent. Just ask them.

Posted by: Richard Mullin at September 21, 2009 4:15 PM

I worked over 32 years in law enforcement and have seen handicapped people assault others and officers on numerous occassions. We once were searching a wheelchair bound suspect and over his objections removed him from his wheelchair to conduct a through search. this was after he was booked at a local station and transported to a County Jail for booking. He was sitting on a loaded revolver and had a history of assaults with a deadly weapon. Don't judge until you have the facts and circumstances.

Posted by: Paul at September 21, 2009 4:16 PM

Some real windbags commenting here. First of all, where did it mention that police found the man abusing a victim? All I read was that the officer(s) was/were called to a DV call. Nothing is mentioned further as to whether or not the allegations were founded. Stop assuming guilt of the citizen without facts.

As for talking back, disrespecting an officer, yada yada "then that's what he deserves", "a cop has the authority to use force blah blah blah". Do your 1st & 4th Amendments (that's the Constitution of the United States of America for the exceedingly ignorant) research. 1st Amendment includes freedom of speech so the guy can say pretty much whatever he wants unless it constitutes threats of harm i.e. menacing, harassment, etc. An officer only has the authority to match the force with which s/he is faced. Or in other words - as I was instructed at the police academy - the threat determines the level of force with which an officer may respond.

Some real braniacs on here. Money says the guy either is guilty of DV and does his time and looks like a jackass in a wheelchair or he 'walks' for lack of evidence and ends up becoming exceedingly wealthy thanks to the ineptitude of Merced's finest. If the latter outcome ends up being the case, then thanks to the police for forcing the taxpayers to shell out $ for a huge settlement.

I have to LOL at the people that think right off the get-go that the police are at fault.

Get the entire story b4 you take sides. Not one of you folks that are posting the negatives was at the location. You have no clue what was taking place, what the suspect was doing, saying, etc. Just because you have no legs does not mean you can’t have a gun or any other type of weapon.

If you want to pass judgment well pass it on to the person it belongs to..Let's see, Police are called out to a DOMESTIC VIOLANCE call, suspect REFUSES to turn over the child to CPS (wonder why). Neighbors called 911 for a fight. Hmmmm so the police should show up and give this guy the key to city? Don't think so. They gave him orders, he refused, he got what was coming to him. Don’t forget, the TASER was introduced to the police via these civil rights folks, YOU ASKED for less lethal weapons…So now you get the less lethal weapons and you are still complaining…Be thankful the person was not shot!

Would really like to see all the warrants this joker had prior to this issue.

The fact of the matter is that every one here is making comments on a situation they did not witness personally and are going on heresay. I work in the medical field as an emt and every situaion is different. So whether or not the officer is right or wrong for what he did, the fact of the matter the only people who should be involved are those who were at the scene when it happened. and besides the media alwas blows things out of proportion just get thier ratings. So if you were not there, maybe you should mind your own business and get on with your own lives!!!!!!!!!

Tasers are lethal force and are only to be used where a gun would be used. Any officer that uses a Taser where lethal force is not required needs to be prosecuted for murder or attempted murder, as the case may be, and for civil rights crimes.

Police are out of hand. They are destroying this country.

Posted by: Thoughtful at September 21, 2009 4:22 PM

I am so sick and tired of hearing about Tasers! Things should be outlawed. Another "crafty" tool inserted into the "use of force" continuum. Something "non-lethal" to grab instead of using police skills. Use your heads people. If you can talk someone "down", while being ready to use whatever you NEED that's the way to go. I talked a guy with a gun down once and NEVER used anything but my handcuffs. This idiot was about to shoot his grand kids and any one else. Instead of listening to the county deputies (who wanted to blast their way in) I called the dude on the phone, told him who I was and told him if we didn't want to die in a bloody gun battle in front of his family he'd better let me in and talk this over. He did. I arrested him, and had him sent for a mental evaluation. Turned out his blood sugar was low, he hadn't taken his medication for depression and had been drinking. Think HE needed Tased? OR SHOT?

Tasing is a form of torture, and inflicts pain on the suspect for the means of 'citizen compliance'. The United Nations recognizes that tasing is a form or torture. Tasing can also stop a beating heart and cause cardiac arrest depending on exactly which valve of the heart was open or closed at the time of the 50,000 Volt electrocution. Tasing a wheelchair bound amputee is ridiculous, and should be illegal.

The only time a cop would "attack" you would be in the protection of their life or the life of another. Cops are here because pieces of shit like you commit crimes and when they do their job we criticize them on how the should of done it. If you can do it better then put on a badge, get the hell out there on the firing line and show us how it's done, unless of course you have a felony charge on your record.

Sure go ahead and take the taser away from law enforcement probably would have been better just to shoot him. You people have no concept of the garbage police have to deal with on a daily basis. They are laying their lives on the line just like military personal and firemen. How dare you judge them? In fact, who are you to judge them? They are as human as anyone else and they have to make tough decisions you could never make. If you think a man with no legs is not dangerous you are an idiot.

Look at the world today do you really think things are getting better, the system is broken. People committing heinous crimes getting off on a technicality. Death Row is not doing it's job executing the scum that the law saw fit to execute. People don't take responsibility for their actions, they don't take account for their fellow man/woman. Steal, rape, murder, an our children are at risk. They are victims because the system is weak, the people we appoint to lead are weak and do not do what should be done an what we expected of them. They are only concerned for themselves, their position in office, and the money they make.

First of all, Michael P. -- YOU'RE AN IDIOT. Preaching to people about 'the facts' when it's clear to me you are just talking to hear your head rattle. You cannot EVER catch HIV (or any STD for that matter)from saliva, look it up. Further, while I agree with most who say a wheelchair-bound person can still be dangerous, unless he was throwing things at the officers I can't imagine HOW they could've felt in danger to the point of tasering him. All they had to do was grab him by the arms and cuff him, if force was needed, fine. Part of fundamental police training is how to subdue with PHYSICAL force, which is EXACTLY what they used before tasers came in to the picture. But the tasering is prove positive that cops are getting pathetically lazy, forgetting that they still have working limbs with which to subdue a handicapped suspect. Hmpf.

The only time a cop would "attack" you would be in the protection of their life or the life of another. Cops are here because pieces of shit like you commit crimes and when they do their job we criticize them on how the should have done it.

Everyone jumps on a partial story. We were not there and I have not seen a video of the COMPLETE case. I was a cop for 23 years and wish that I had a tazer back in the day. I did have a night stick aka baton, chemical spray and a firearm. There are folks out there who are disabled who, under the right circumstances can cause injury or death to an Officer or civilian. If the Officer was wrong, then proper steps will be taken. If the Officer was right, then the bleeding hearts will have to look somewhere else to complain. As I told folks who screamed in my face about ugly cops, IF YOU DON'T LIKE COPS, THEN QUIT CALLING US TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROBLEMS. CALL THE ACLU.
Thanks

Posted by: stefan at September 21, 2009 4:27 PM

Wow! Did anybody read the whole story? A wheelchair doesn't stop a person from being a criminal or behaving violently. The officer was at the house for DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, so if wheelchair man could assault someone in his own family, then he can assault an officer.

Put yourself in the place of the police officer.
I am not a COP , and dont wnat to be one. But when they are hired to do a job (PROTECT AND SERVE) and you have someone being a horses ass and they have to do thier job then award them! Dont knock them down. They are out there to help protect our cities and then you have these bleeding hart people that say Oh he was always such a good man. He never deserved that. He only sold crack at night. He would never do that. My thoughts. 1. if your stupid enough to not listen to a police officer then you deserve to be shot. 2. If you run then you obviously have are trying to hide something, again you deserve to be shot. The police in my mind should be given medals for having to put up with the crap that we have allowed on the streets. And should be honored not thrown stones at. These lady and gentlemen are putting up with people that our society have allowed far too long. It's only going to get worse if we continue to allow criminals rights and stop treating them like the scum that they are.

I believe the officer used the most effective way to subdue the offender. look at it this way the officer could have easily popped some holes in him or beat him with the night stick.

There are two sides to every story!

Isn't it funny how the news article insinuated race as a possible motive? Funny that they have to shove this every time!

Sensationalize the story of a jerk who was abusing his family and just because he is an amputee and black, he gets his story in the news.

I am so tired of this type of reporting!

The taser is the worst thing that we gave "as if we had any say on the matter" a police officer. With the police mentality the way it is that's just what these cops don't need..With their attitudes they are just gunho to display their authority. I see enough of this thru personal encounters and hear about other people's experiences to see it's abused. I think a petition to outlaw the police from having tasers is waranted.

Oh stop defending the poor disabled man. If he was disabled and defensless, the police officers would've never been called. Since he was being uncooperative, he deserves the taser. Police arrive there to help you, so cooperate and listen to what they say. That way you will not get beaten, tasered or even shot by any of the brave police officers that defend our public. Every case is where the person or suspect does not listen and does as he or she wants. Then they complain that they needed to be discipled. Black, white or green, it does not matter. You dont listen and are being uncooperative, you will be disciplined.

Posted by: karl at September 21, 2009 4:46 PM

I have been in law enforcement for 40 years, and the one thing that is always prevelant when it comes to police vs citizen interaction is that the citizen has failed to comply with the police instructions. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the citizens want to plead their case first before they comply and that results in force. People would be far further ahead and would have less physical contact with police if they would just comply first and then make their case. It's to late to make your point once you have been physically subdued. Police have to make a decision in an often hostile enviornment and do not have time to argue. They need to take control of the scene first before they can ascertain whats going on. When people want to argue their point first, it delays control of the scene and allows hostilities to grow. Everyone has rights, but it does not mean they shouldn't comply first and then discuss them.

Posted by: renato at September 21, 2009 4:51 PM

Tasers can be lethal. There are many cases where they have caused serious permanent damage and a few where they caused death. I agree a person can be violent and cause damage even in a wheelchair, but a cop with a partner should have been able to subdue him without tazing him, especially 2 times, if as the original article indicated, the legless man was unarmed. If the cop was alone and if the man's partner was also causing him problems maybe he felt overwhelmed. But lately I have read more and more about the police using tasers to subdue someone that won't follow directions quick enough to please them and then over using it to keep them down, when the person is already incapacitated. I trained as a police officer, and I think they need more training and while they aren't social workers, they should try defusing situations instead of always leaping to use violence to quell violence.

It’s funny that most people are looking at (2) things. The man was black and that he was in a wheel chair. Resisting arrest isn’t based upon skin color or handicap. It is possible that the officers used all reasonable measures to get the man to comply with their requests/orders prior to using the Tazer. I am not choosing sides or defending either party, but the investigation will look at facts. Not skin color or handicap. Let’s wait until the investigation is complete before passing judgment on the officers. On the fact that charges were not filed after he sat in jail for (6) days. Right or wrong this is a common occurrence. The Court system in California is backed up and the jails are overcrowded. There are a lot of people that deserve to be in jail but walk because the system is overloaded. California has a great system in place to deal with domestic violence. If the facts support his being charged, he will be charged. The laws in California require this same as the laws require an officer to arrest when there are allegations of domestic violence. The officer has no choice.

first, police suck. second, that pig was just amusing himself at the expense of a disabled person. where's the ACLU when you really need them?. if that guy were my family member that pig would have to go into hiding. the reality however, is that another asshole cop will get away with a truly inhuman act against the public in which they lie about being there to protect. in these days of out of control pigs we must defend ourselves from them while keeping in mind the fact that their captains will defend their evil acts, internal affairs will defend the assinine captains so on and so forth right up to our "elected" officials in washington. their "job" is to keep the public under control by any means necessary. that doesn't equate to "protecting and serving" by any stretch of the imagination. at what point in time did the public stop looking to the "police" as defenders of the public interests and start seeing them as enforcers to be feared? although, there are some who aren't afraid, but you'll never see one of them being abused by some asshole cop on the 6:00 news! as far as you "know it all" idiots who think and say tasering isn't so bad or even dangerous, go say that shit to even one of the families that had a loved one killed by some rabbid pig on a taser abuse high. as far as myself, my taser gun works a little differently than the ones police carry. can't wait to try it out.

You have seen how hatred is against colored amongst the whites and mounting up for the cops when they choose to act with ignorance and arrogance when it comes on to colors not of their interest. I must admit their are many good white nice cops,
BUT
This has been too long overlooked only for these weak and fearful cops to escape being charged themselves for crimes which are blatantly of racism; the law (which favors white more than color) has no interest in a black man rights when their own kind has their backs against the wall for doing stupid, bias, and insulting things to other races (mostly black).

But, for the other races to retaliate it will only prove that one fool makes many. Stand your ground races of other color and show that your ignorance and arrogance is not close to their par.

Police officers was responded to a DV call, most likely the suspect in the wheelchair assaulted his live in partner. Apparently he was tasered when they tried to handcuff him. Pepper spray would not have worked in a confined space. A strong person on a wheelchair could spit, bite, and punch when resisting arrest. The police used whatever non- lethal force to subdue him.

Isn't it a red flag to a problem within our society that so many people could have such strong opinions based on so little information? Why on earth would anyone even support the argument of a criminal (at least a man suspected of domestic abuse and resisting arrest) when it comes to criminal versus upstanding law abiding family police officer? Is it an I hate white people thing? Is it an I hate authority of police thing? Remember the incident just recently where the respected professor was arrested? Even the U.S. President had to make a formal recant of his cries of racism and improper police action.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 5:09 PM

Wow, I cannot believe that in this day and age you people can still be so STUPID! A Taser lasts 5 Seconds. 50,000 volts, which by the way, comes from a battery the size of a 9 volt. No charges? He has charges, by the Police. The District Attorney has not filed the case in court, big difference. Just because he is in a wheelchair makes no difference either. Tell you what, I'll get in a wheelchair and let you come at me. I'm not in it everyday, but I gurantee you that before you lay a finger on me, I'll cut your legs to pieces and break a few bones. Oh yea, let's not forget the race issue crap. Guess only white people can arrest white people now? Does that mean only blacks can arrest blacks? If that were the case guess the blacks wouldn't arrest anybody then, because according to you all blacks are innocent and whites are racists? Grow up people and use your heads. I have a better idea, lets get rid of tasers and go back to the batons. Instead of a simple five second taser, they can get struck with a baton and break bones. Guess you'll gripe about that too.

Hey Jan, why don't you read the cases of this and stop posting something you know nothing about. Every person who has died after a Taser incident were people that had so much Cocaine, LSD, Heroin, or Meth in their system, that they died from Excited Delerium or Cocaine Psychosis. Both are medical conditions brought about when they fought the police. The Taser had no cause in their deaths. This has been proven by numerous medical examiners across the country.

T. from Georgia...

Thanks to you my brother, great post I agree with you 100%. I say we let these bleeding hearts get their house broken into and see if they would like us to Taser the suspect as he is running away. Or maybe when they are getting robbed at knifepoint? Betcha they change their attitude then huh?

A 15 year old boy died in Bay City, MI after being tasered by police officers. He was not on any kind of drugs and never had been. He may have had an uderlying heart condition, but that was never proven. But he is still dead. Those are facts. And he was not the only case. Obviously you are the one that knows nothing about the ill effects on some people of being tasered. What an A-O

The ignorance of the posts on this page is staggering. Why is it Americans always pull the race card when something like this happens? None of the people posting on this page were at the scene when all of this transpired, so how can they make an intelligent comment about the situation. Maybe the officers overstepped their authority with the suspect. But if you look at it from an officer’s point of view, maybe it would be a little different.

The suspect was in a wheelchair but he has two perfectly good arms. Legs rarely hurt officers but hands cause a lot of damage. Far be it for these officers to want to go home to their families at the end of their shifts without injury or having to fight the suspect for their gun. The first thing people do is blame the police for their problems, when in fact, if they wouldn’t act like a moron in the first place, the police wouldn’t have to be there.

If these officers went too far, internal affairs will handle that issue. A point to think about: The public hates the police. The public things the police overstep their authority and abuse the public. The public also thinks an officer should give up his or her life just because its, “part of the job.” The public needs to wake up! The public hates police and all officers know this. But officers are the first ones to be called when there is a problem. Think of the world without police for a minute. They have a word for this concept…Anarchy.

The Thin Blue Line: Sometimes there’s justice…sometimes there’s just us.

Thank God for the 2nd amendment. If a cop pulls a taser, shoot the sob. I'm sick of taser abuse. Cops should take a verbal abuse course in which they learn to take back talk. Sticks and stones, ya know?

Posted by: Wolfie469 at September 21, 2009 5:23 PM

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO A HELPLESS MAN?????WITHOUT NO LEGS??? THAT OFFICER SURE DOSENT HAVE A HEART. BESIDES THIS THE OFFICER IS WHITE?? AND THE MAN IN THE WHEELCHAIR IS BLACK?? DONT YOU ALL SEE THE PICTURE HERE?? NEVER COULD GET ENOUGH OF ALL THIS BLACK AND WHITE SHIT!!!!!!

Posted by: MIKE HUNT at September 21, 2009 5:25 PM

your full of it if you think taser dont do permanent damage. do a little research before you post a comment. second, cops are pigs. most only do the job because of the power trip and because 95% of them could not make it in the real world. cops are lazy, stupid, and pointless if they just keep making stupid mistakes like these guys. And no, most of us dont know what it like to be a cop because most of us are way to smart to do a dumbass job like that.

Sorry, I don't know any upstanding law abiding police officers. Just a pack of roving gang members with badges and the right to carry guns.

Ok Jan you got me, wow! Why don't you dig just a bit deeper. The Taser has 50,000 volts. Sound like a lot, well it isn't. You get more from static electricity. Volts do not kill you, amps do. There is less than .25 amp in a taser. Not even close to the amount needed to kill you. As far as the 15 year old, check again, he had a heart condition, which was proven, and was ruled as Excited Delerium.

You sound like somebody that wanted to be a cop but couldn't pass the test. Guess putting the crayons in correct order was too much for ya?

10 seconds to make a decision and 2 months to pick it apart. What is disturbing about this whole thread is that there seem to be limited facts about what happened. Seems like more information is needed before the mob stones the officer or suspect. I have a hard time believing that police use their tazers lightly, but I have also seen when they shouldn't have too. I am going to reserve my opinion until all the facts come to life. Seems like we all should.

I work for a police department. I happen to know there are MANY protocols in place for use of tasers. People need to do their research before they start spouting off about things they know nothing about. Just because a man is in a wheel chair does not mean he cannot hit an officer or resist arrest. Just because the man that was arrested says he did not have any weapons does not mean he didn't, and the public's idea of what a weapon is may be different than law enforcements ideas.

Nowhere did I read the cops story.. They can't shoot you now, no more nightsticks, must not touch or lawsuit. What's next? Outlaw tazers and use pillows. Courts have emasculated the police. Save money, close the police department and let people settle their own problems like the Wild West.

Obviously most of the people here are not cops. Legless does not mean harmless nor does it mean innocent. I've been the lone officer responding to a man in a wheel chair (just sitting in traffic) that would have tried to bash my head in given the chance. All I did was say hello. Thank goodness for backup and training. Tasing is a much safer way to go than shooting or beating someone with a baton; tasing leaves no damage it just neutralizes the nervous system. There is no research that substantiates claims that tasing has any ill effect on the body. As far as the cop bashers go, there are bad apples everywhere. Lots of them have nothing to do but insult those of us who risks our lives for your petty indulgences.
sincerely,

To those of you who think police officers should be shot if they use tazers: Do YOU put on a bullet proof vest when you go to work every day? Do you put your life on the line for 15 bucks an hour average? Police are already a target just because they wear a uniform. You don't know what this man did to get tazed, do some research and stop spouting off when you don't know the facts.

Have we had enough of these so called"protectors" yet? I for one am sick and tired of cops getting away with whatever they choose to do.Tasing is just one of the activities they get away with on a regular basis. The majority of them think they are above the law.Think about it,how many times have you been on the highway when a cop blows by you{well exceeding the speed limit},with no lights or sirens going? Now,before you say"he was going to the scene of the crime silent",that is hardly ever the case! Just 3 days ago,I witnessed a Pa. state trooper blow by me just to get to a speed trap! Not only did he speed, but he also tailgated and changed lanes in an illegal way coming very close to the other vehicles. This is just one mentioned incident witnessed by me as I was driving. Also,I have seen on many occasions"off duty" cops drinking......then driving home........TOTALLY DRUNK!!! But it's O.K. you see, they have "courtesy cards". They just show the responding cop the "card",and ALL IS FORGIVEN. They are just thugs with a badge for the most part, and they will NEVER have my respect. God help them if they ever ask me for assistance, because they will receive a snide remark of some kind.........that's all!

PALEEEESE. Tasers supposedly are to subdue someone from ENDANGERING the police officer, to protect from a police (or civilian) FATALITY. The assumption is that the taser isn't fatal where it has been (fatal) in many situations. Tasers are NOT meant for use with plain uncooperativeness.

Everybody is racist is some way in their thinking. So shut up about the reverse situation. Racism is the only reason the white officers LOOK/ARE bad, and not because of WHAT they did? IF the situation was reversed, you can bet your baby's life that they (black officers) would be crucified for this act of stupidity.

The woman reported him for abuse, domestic violence or whatever it was, WHO says that accusation was valid?

We should be appalled that this happens. Stop giving the police carte blanche because just bc we don't know all the details. LEGLESS man in wheelchair, handcuffs, UNARMED, maybe = cooperation, let's see, what else could 2 of you do facing one angry double gimp? Don't even say you didn't assess the situation prior to entering. Oh, ok, that's why you stooped to your easy way out--wait you were already that low. STUPID.

Posted by: MIKE HUNT at September 21, 2009 5:47 PM

Actually Mike, I am a cop. I am also a Taser instructor and have been for 8 years. I've been Tasered numerous times and I can attest that there are no adverse affects. Everyone else can sit at home and "Monday Morning Quarterback" an officers decision to use their taser, but the bottom line is that these are the people that do not have the courage or intelligence to become an officer. I have been a cop for 17 years and not one reprimand. Like any other profession, we have our bad apples. I'm sure that if you look at where you work, you do too. Most people write that off because those people are their friends and they know them. You can call me what you want, I really do not care, but I gurantee that as soon as you need help for something stupid, you will be dialing as fast as you can.

Also,go to coppercards.com It IS illegal to arrest, and jail ANYONE in this country without an indictment from a GRAND JURY.This can legally only be obtained after the plaintiff issues a hand written complaint. This is a constitutional right people.....look it up! The same goes for the situation we are ALL familiar with.It goes something like this: Someone{usually a female},calls the police for a "domestic disturbance".The police get there, listen to each side, then usually arrest the man,and take him to jail.THIS IS AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION!!! Again,LOOK IT UP! And traffic citations{ILLEGAL AGAIN}. There are so many things the "powers that be" get away with it makes me sick to my stomach.Again, these are not just some ramblings from a disgruntled person, they are Constitutional Rights, and it's time to take the country back from the politicians who stole it from us over the last several hundred years! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at September 21, 2009 5:56 PM

Posted by: mike at September 21, 2009 6:12 PM

Why were the police called? My guess someone was causing a distuburance. It is real simple if this man was casuing a disturbance he probably was giving the police trouble. I guess it was his house, but we need to respect the law. I am sure he was upset but that is no excuse. I feel sorry for this man with no legs, but I also feel sorry for the police who have to put up with anyone who is violent or casues a disturbance. To many of you that disagree with this are not really thinking what took place. With that been said I hope and pray that when problems like this happen it is not with you or your family or friends.

to all of you cops reading this. i dont feel that this was a race issue but i do feel the officers used excessive force. wow, the man was not cooperating with them, big deal. i bet they also were being arrogant and not hearing his side of the story either. i wouldnt be exactly cooperative either if an officer was saaying he was going to taze me in front of my kids either and was in my house barking orders either

Posted by: shea at September 21, 2009 6:25 PM

This is just another example of police misconduct. I do not belive it was necessary for two able bodied officers to taser a double amputee. Personally I have not had a bad experience with law enforcement. However I realize I could be a victim of police brutality given the right set of circumstances. I don’t trust the police in general because I can not identify corrupt ones. There are dedicated officers but there are enough bad ones to give the force a bad name. If police really want to improve their image then prosecute misconduct and the good officers should identify the law breakers. If this is done across the board then I believe public trust will start to return.

I have seen officer lie on the stand to get a conviction I got a belly full and retired. SHAME on the OFFICERS for tasering that man if they can not handle that they need to find a new job and one other note if the POLICE want to arrest you it all comes DOWN to how they write the report up and JURYS BELIEVE THE OFFICER OVER CITZEN people wake up I know how it works..and before anyone says anything that is why I retired and 22 yrs. I got tired of the system being abused by the POLICE

Soon enough a tase-proof vest will be invented which will deflect the electricity back to the source, and cause cops to tase themselves. Sorta like a forcefield to protect against rogue cops who tase for fun. The Taserboomerang™, 'Tase me and you tase yourself!'

Stare down your local po-po a few days after a ticket or a stop or a anything when he's in street clothes. Just look po-po in the eyes and not speak -like any other ordinary stranger you would meet. He's scared. It's their attitude. You know that we're never going back to Mayberry. Never. Not as a common place. Over done it's RARE. We are all treated as a threat so cooperate! You can't even pull your car over along side the hiway to take a break and a cop will suspect you. It's insane. Who shot at all these corksoakers? I wouldn't want a police job. I'm human. I can see many sides of many peoples experiences but how can you not be a super dick and be a cop? You know -quit- if you can't follow procedures. Be a firefighter or haul trash or some crap. You'll never get a pat on the back from me! The only time I don't have a bad experience is when I give them complete submission. It's fudged up. I hope the reallity of how violent this world really never hits me. I'm just glad I'm not a cop. Hope you all taser yourselves to smithereens.

Ok, so this guy was resisting arrest. He had the capability to assault, since they were called out for a Dom viol case. What were they supposed to do? They are in a damned if you do or don't situation. Were they supposed to knock him out of the chair and cuff him? Smack him with a nightstick?? All of these folks who say that they should have talked to the poor fellow and held hands and sung campfire songs have never been in a situation such as this. They would be the first ones peeing their pants and grabbing for the taser. I think that tasering has seen an increase, but I think you'll also notice that police "beatings" of suspects have dropped as well... And have you ever seen the arms on some wheelchair bound men? Pretty freakin' big and can do some damage.. Give em a break, or the next time you're in trouble and need law enforcement. Deal with it yourself...

It also seems that everyone knows the full story of the guy who got zapped. Again, one side only. I am also willing to bet all those folks who are bad mouthing cops are the 1st to call 911 when a 4 year old make noise or a dog runs down the street. To the clown who ade threats to any cop who would come on his property an would shoot them....I bet you would be the first one to drop the soap in jail. Actually you could be arrested for those threats if you had the balls to say it to a cops face....The taser would really look good then. Cops are NOT rerfect...Looking at some of the entries, either are some civilians. Can not imagine why I retired in 1993.

we obviously dont live in a perfect society and their are wrongs done on both sides of the law. what gets me is these officers that think its funny when they tell stories of tazing peolpe. i see no humor in a person getting hurt nor do i find humor in an officer or fireman being hurt either. i am guilty of one thing and thats not doing something when ive heard officers laughing about the scratches on the bedpost or the boasting of tazing people. i used to be the guy that was always in trouble with the law. i understand there are great officers out there that want to make a differnce and i know there are also the ones that enjoy being the bullies because the law is on their side. i think officers in the academy should have to be screened before hiring to keep the bad ones out. this would also keep the innocent from being charged of things like defending themselves from being hurt by police brutality

Posted by: shea at September 21, 2009 8:10 PM

The tazing incident does seem rather cowardly, especially to leave the man on the ground, humiliated in handcuffs, with his genitals hanging out. It's very easy to turn a blind eye and think it couldn't possibly be racist when you've never witnessed blatant racist behavior. What's amazing is how many people of other colored races tolerate and even approve of racism towards their fellow black americans. Even the white guy interviewed on the video commented on how unbelieveably shocking and wrong this tazing incident was. Whether it was racially motivated or bigotry towards amputees, either way, these guys are the bad apples of the Merced PD.

For those who say tasering is not harmful or has long lasting effects, you have to know that depends on the physical condition of the person being tasered. A person with a bad heart or an artificial heart or pacemaker could potentially die as a result of being tasered. But as long as it's a poor, under privileged person or minority, then I guess there will always be those of you who will say the cops were justified. I come from a cop family and at one point had passed the police entrance exam for the Chicago, Illinois police department but decided to pass on taking the job after having a bad experience in Chicago as a fire fighter. Let me tell you, just because a person wears a uniform and wears a badge does not mean they are a good person. There are cops who are fired or put in jail all the time due to being caught for committing criminal acts. If you don't believe me, then just do a little research on google or yahoo and type in cops charged with criminal offense or cops arrested for drug dealing or for burglary or robbery. Cops acn and have committed criminal acts. Also google search rampart police arrested for framing people and falsifying reports.

We need to arrest cops for acts like this, not just fire or suspend them. But then again, you can believe this will be white washed over and an innocent man will have his name sullied and has already been entered into the criminal database as a result of his arrest.

If it were me, they would have had to kill me before I let some ass hole come along and take my child from my arms.

And as far as being called in to investigate domestic violence? Don't be so quick to assume it was he who was being abusive. Women can be just as abusive as any man, even more so but it's not usually reported because most men are ashamed to admit that they are being abused by their wives.

Many women have used the domestic abuse claim to cause harm to men that did no wrong.

I myself was once falsely accused of domestic abuse by an ex-wife, (we were divorced in 1992 when my daughter was three years old,) who ran away one day with my daughter who two years old at the time, while I was at work and used the domestic abuse excuse, as it was called back then, to get a divorce and take my daughter away from me.

In actuality, she was the abuser who physically abused me and my daughter, knowing that I believed in never hitting a woman. Especially one who was much smaller than myself. But she knew how to work the system and how to push my button, which was to hurt my daughter. She discovered my button first by violently shaking my daughter simply for crying when she was only six months old. I of course reacted by throwing my wife across the room, but never hit her. She then knew that physically attacking me was useless, and that I wouldn't defend myself but that I would in fact, defend my baby daughter and now knew what my button was.

One day I had finally gotten fed up with her abusing my daughter and accidently gave my now ex-wife a black eye during a tug of war as she tried to rip my daughter from my arms while I was laying on the sofa where I had been sleeping for the better part of a year and out of a combination of anger and frustration I lashed out by kicking her and giving my ex-wife a black eye. I was in the wrong, I should have called the police when the violence started but my pride wouldn't let me.

So you see, the system is so geared towards women, that nobody ever questioned her or any of our neighbors or even investigated. They never thought to ask if she made a police report, which she didn't because the cops would have had to come to our home and would have seen how frightened my daughter was of her mother.

Instead the system hid my now ex-wife and my daughter away from me in an abused wives protection program, and the courts awarded her custody of our daughter. But now that I think about it, I'd do it again in a heart beat to protect my daughter who was only three years old at that time. It was a reflex. And I don't apologize for doing it.

I later found out that my now ex-wife just wanted out of our relationship. All she had to do was ask and I would gladly have let her go and try to stay friends for the sake of our daughter. But no, she wanted to hurt me and took my daughter away because she knew how much I loved my daughter and I never found out where she took her from that day on. All I had ever got was a Post office box number to send my child support payments to.

But hey, there's always two sides to every story and you're probably wandering what caused my ex to hate me so much?

Well my mother and stepfather and two of my younger brothers didn't like my ex and said so to her face while she was still pregnant with our daughter. That hurt my ex and it also hurt me, so I divorced myself from my family for three years during which I did smoke pot for a while before my daughter was born but told my wife at the time, that I would quit smoking even though she said I didn't have to. But no, I was stupid and I promised to quit because I loved her.

Well one day just before my daughter was born I decided to confess that for almost a year after I said I would quit, I had in fact kept smoking secretly and though I finally did quit before my daughter was born, my ex-wife saw me as a liar and therefore imperfect and hated me ever since and set out to make me pay for the rest of my life for what she saw as my betrayal of her trust. I never even cheated on her with another woman or anything like that. I simply had just told her a single lie. And so she set out to ruin our family life and became psychotically abusive. And somehow I blamed myself and tried to make things work, even when she obviously didn't want things to work out.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that some men don't abuse their wives, that would simply be stupid, but do not ever assume that women are not themselves capable of domestic violence simply because they are women. We see it all the time where mothers kill their own children.

I guess it's like they say, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" or lied to for that matter. I just wander if that lie was worth destroying our family over, for her?

Anyway, enough of my rant on domestic violence. Just remember don't assume that when police are called in on a domestic violence case, it doesn't mean that the woman is telling the truth or that she isn't the abuser.

Also we need to review child protective services, and instate some new reforms that don't give other people or government the power to come in and take our children away from us. We give the government and police too much power over us. Whatever happened to "of the people, by the people, for the people?" When did we all become so afraid to govern and do for ourselves so much so, that we just handed over our freedom and civil liberties to what is quickly becoming a police state? Where cops can do whatever they want, whenever they want, and get away with it?

Also remember, there will always be those that side with the cops, no matter what they do, because they are cops, or family members of cops, or politicians or big business concerns who benefit from maintaining control over the general populace.

Please feel free to debate anything here. I welcome it. Also feel free to copy this comment in it's entire form, to post in any other appropriate forums.

This is NO SURPRISE!!. Cops have been abusing their authority, hiding behind their badges for years and it's only getting worse. This stuff occurs all the time and very very rarely is it addressed in the open. Police are and have been out of control for years. Most cops are ignorant, lying, cheating, theiving degenerates with serious psychological and ego problems who think they are above the law. Just as the exCOP above admitted; they can't be trusted. This guy was a crippled double amputee in a wheelchair 'accused' of DV. Cut the crappie excuses!! If some cop and his colleagues are so in-ept after training that they cannot manually subdue a cripple without the use of a taser x2 then that cop is a pathetic excuse of an officer, has NO IDEA what he's doin',shouldn't be allowed to be a cop and is probably a danger to us all. Abuse of power by "pigs" is all too common as those of us with experience know and especially those of us of color know. Common sense says these cops were almost without a doubt completely out-of-line and why shouldn't they do what ever they want to to a poor crippled black man? -They've been getting away with this type of abuse for years!

Also, it's been documented that a taser can kill you; especially if you have any kind of heart condition of which from a medical standpoint, a wheelchair bound double amputee like this man would be at high risk of having.

Posted by: MDNelson at September 21, 2009 9:56 PM

I see where some gutless trash said he would get in a wheelchair and let someone come at him. I'd like to take him up on that but mr gutless didn't leave a name , much less address where I can come meet him. But to be a real fair comparison he should have his legs duct taped under him. Come on gutless give us your name and address where I can have some fun

For those idiots, the guy has his 1 year old baby girl on his lap when the police arrived, took his baby from him and tasered him when they got bored talking to him, maybe police these days are very well uneducated that they can't stand a few minutes of diplomatic talk, watched the videos you stupid pro police-brutality idiots.

Posted by: Angel Eyes at September 21, 2009 9:59 PM

When a cop says something you do it. if he says lick his boots, you do it. If not he should be shot. If a cop tells a legless man to stand up and put his hands behind his back, he better do it or he should be shot not tazered. Just because he can't is not an excuse. The cop told him to stand up. He didn't do it. Kill him.

There is really not enough info on the subject to make a good call. And Im pretty sure race was not involved.

Posted by: bob at September 21, 2009 10:22 PM

Ok people, please stop pulling the race card on this situation. For those who don't know there is actually no differences between the races. We are all the same. Anyway back to the police who tasered a man in a wheel chair. There are a lot of bad policemen out there, you read about them in the news hear about it on tv. There are many people who join the police force just to hurt. But not all of them are bad. There are people who join to protect others. So despite what many of you think we need the police. We can't say that everyone who is a policeman or woman are cruel, power-hungry criminals because not all of them are. There are a lot of bad police out there and many of them get away with injustice. So you tell me, how are we going to keep bad men from joining the police force so they will not take advantage of innocent people. I'm not saying that the man was innocent but most likely he probably is.

Posted by: Kittens at September 21, 2009 10:25 PM

The larger picture here is that although this didn't happen to you or I, it does happen and it will happen to someone you know and love; maybe your father, brother, husband, son or even yourself. Our country and the many laws that were made to protect us have imprisoned us all. We truly no longer live in a free country as it was founded and intended to be. It has become a twisted circus and mark my words on this day that soon our country will implode and the people will eventually divide themselves geographically just as it has unexpectedly happened in numerous other countries. Little things like this are just the begining of what's to come...

To you dirt-ball gutless cops (you know who you are!) Your time is commin'. To the others: quit defending you low-down, criminal police colleagues. "Code of Silence" is bullshit! "Evil prevails when good men do nothing"

Posted by: MDNelson at September 21, 2009 10:33 PM

I hope everyone is enjoying this discusion (sorry if i misspelled that). I have to go to bed now because i have school. I hope the man who the police tasered will be alright and that they find something to do with those police. Because tasering a man who cannot walk is a little out of hand. whether he is innocent or not. good night everyone.

Posted by: Kittens at September 21, 2009 10:34 PM

One last thing: to those of you who say "I don't think race was an issue" I say "RACE IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE!!" Only in a perfect world is race not an issue and obviously we don't live in a perfect world. Without trying to offend anyone, and knowing that most of the white people will not understand, I can say for certain that race is always an issue; it's just a matter of to what degree. Often it's not intentional or overt but always at least subconciously present; it cannot be helped.

Hey amp u tee come to my county and resist arrest.. I would tase your dumb ass before u could say law suit. Dumb ass, everyone is so brave on here. " Tase me and I'll do this or I'll do that to the cop" , To late , your already on the ground crying for your mommy and Jesus to save you. LMAO
Several years ago a man in a wheelchair decided he didn't want to stop for a state trooper, the fool was using a stick to drive his truck, and so he decided to use a 22 rifle and started shooting at the trooper. Did the trooper shoot back? No, because the man had his 10yr old daughter in the truck with him. The man did go to jail and thats where he died. The trooper used good sound judgement, took cover till he ran out of ammo. Now, you bleeding heart liberals are probably going to make something out of this story even after reading the facts. Amp u tee, whens the last time you got in the face of a cop? Or maybe thats why you in a chair? Or maybe your just a miserable little man feeling sorry for himself. What ever your problem is ... come on down to Ga. and I will show you what a taser ride feels like when you let your mouth over ride your ass, MORON!

MD nelson, not sure where you are getting your information but to date NO case of death by Taser has been proven. All deaths in conjunction with the taser has been contributed to other causes. Show me a court case where it has been ruled that the taser was the cause of death. Show me a coroners report that states cause of death was the taser. sORRY BUT YOU WILL NO FIND ANY

Posted by: T. from Georgia at September 21, 2009 11:12 PM

RACE ? Bet everyone who claims the incident was based on race is not white. I also bet if you go and read the article you will see that the cops partner on the scene was a black cop. So, how can it be a race incident? Look people, most cops do not care if you are red, white, blue, yellow or black or green. All the cop wants to do is settle the incident, make an arrest of one is warranted, and go on about his job. People like you, the ones always playing the race card, are what keeps the race issue alive, well you and Obama that is.

Posted by: T. from Georgia at September 21, 2009 11:19 PM

The partner was hispanic not black sorry for the mistake

Posted by: T. from Georgia at September 21, 2009 11:29 PM

Ok Kittens, Pleeease get your head out of the sand on race relations in America,
"Ok people, please stop pulling the race card on this situation. For those who don't know there is actually no differences between the races. We are all the same. Anyway back to the police who tasered a man in a wheel chair. "
in case you haven't noticed our country has just as much racial tension as ever. Just read the articles, blogs, and the posts about our current president. You would be blind not to see racism is alive and well in America, for you to trivialize this fact is the complete denial that keeps you so smug. It's also quite probable that there was racism and prejudice involved whether the man was guilty of resisting arrest or not. Yes we did all come from the same gene pool thousands of years ago, a proven fact, but there are still major differences in how the races are treated by police.

Posted by: Mito at September 21, 2009 11:34 PM

Hey, T from Georgia,

Do you send your hood out for dry cleaning? Or do you wash it yourself?

Why is it that whenever someone stands up against injustice, their labeled a liberal. What do conservatives have against equality amongst the races and sexes, other than a perceived loss of control and of course we all know control is power, don't we?

Posted by: D. Singh at September 22, 2009 12:23 AM

"Show me a court case where it's been proven" Dead people don't prove shit in court: they're dead! If you don't want to look for it you'll never find it. Just do a simple search and you can just scratch the surface of Taser related deaths. Don't be stupid! It's not a common occurence but people CAN and DO die as a result of the use of Tasers and the fact is; taser use is becoming overwhelmingly abused- A substitute for good old fashioned "professional" police mediation.

Listen to the video testimony/interview from the man who was tased. And yes he did claim to have a heart problem which is typical of a man in his condition. Also of note is that this guy isn't some wheelchair bound brut with 22 inch arms from pushin' his wheelchair around either. He's just an old scrawny crippled black man they thought they could have some fun with. Everything he said sounds on point and easily believable from the cops amusement about tasin' him down to the cops fabricating CPS charges to build a smoke-screen to cover up their own misconduct. Shady shit that is an all to common M.O. for pigs.

Posted by: MDNelson at September 22, 2009 12:28 AM

For all the cops who use their tasers on wheelchair amputees for fun; do unto others as you want done to you, because after judgement day, Satan's got a bigger, badder taser gun just waiting to show you what hell is like, for the rest of eternity, laughing all the way, hahahah

Posted by: Don Tredonme at September 22, 2009 12:38 AM

Gee, could this story have been anymore incomplete? who ever wrote this gave no details about anything. My 5 year old could have written this story better. It automatically makes the cops look bad. It would have been nice to know what happened from both sides. I seriously doubt that the cops were jumping with joy to taser a guy in the wheel chair with no legs. That being said I've seen my share of asshole cops, that think that the badge they wear gives them absolute power. and as far as the race card, well it is what it is, and in todays world whitey is always wrong.

Posted by: robbyrd at September 22, 2009 12:51 AM

lanz,

Obviously you're still stuck in the 70's. Really, negro president? Why don't you say what you really want to say? You bigots out there that try to say you're not bigots, get real. I bet you wouldn't want an African American, Latino or Asian person marrying into your family either, would you? You have to keep that aryan blood pure, right? Any police abuse is justifiable as long as it's not you being abused right? Bigots!!! And on the flip side you bigots of color, shame on you too, for not being better than these asses who seek always to oppress and dominate everyone else. The gang wars going on between the races is just senseless and cowardly, as almost always it's innocent people who get hurt more often than the actual intended targets of drive by shootings.

God have mercy on all of our souls!!!!

Posted by: Naomi at September 22, 2009 2:29 AM

True, the story is incomplete and lacks a police department statement other than the internal investigation of the tazing. It does however lead one to draw speculation about their need to taser the unarmed, disabled man twice. The story needs to be public and the truth told however uncomfortable it may make some feel. That includes discussing race, prejudice and disablility, major issues that won't just go away. Using the term "race card" simply trivializes what doesn't affect you or yours and makes prejudice and injustice more palatable.

Posted by: Mito at September 22, 2009 2:49 AM

Also to those of you who so quickly forget. Just a couple of years or so ago, A cop shot an unarmed Marine just back from fighting for your freaking freedom. He force the Marine to get down on the ground, then told him to get up. And as the marine started to get up slowly, the cop, who was African American by the way, and the Marine was Mexican American, I believe, the cop shot him several times at close range unaware that he was being video taped by a concerned citizen. The cop then claimed that the marine tried to attack him, which clearly a lie as evidenced by the video tape and do you know, that the police department tried their best to say the cop was justified?

My GOD! The man fought for our country and this is his reward?
Obviously this was an abuse of power. The Marine even identified himself as a Marine and military police officer, but that made no difference, the cop still tried to murder the man in cold blood, for no good reason, other than the man didn't stop right away when ordered to pull his car over.

My advice to you people that keep trying to defend the indefensible actions of rogue cops, is don't turn a blind eye to this kind of oppression. Attempted murder is attempted murder. It doesn't matter if you wearing a uniform or not.

Oh, and by the way, did you know that a large percentage of cops commit domestic violence themselves, claiming the stress of their jobs as a reason. But in reality, it's nothing more than them feeling untouchable because of their good old boy system of protecting each other and taking their bullying ways home with them. many of these cops' kids commit suicide as a result.

My own adopted sister was beaten to death by her cop husband back in the late 70's in Texas and got away with it saying that after he knocked her down, he left the house and she was still alive when he left and when he came home, he found her dead and that someone else must have broken in and killed her after their fight. The fight by the way was over him cheating on her with another woman. Convenient, wouldn't you say? I can say that he was fired from the department but never faced charges of murder. Oh yeah, and just for the record, she and her younger sister who had disappeared a couple of years earlier and their brother, had just inherited an high yield oil well from their father who had passed away a few years earlier. This cop's name for the record was Officer Robert Brown and my adopted sister's maiden name was Leah Whitlock, if any of you so called cops out there want to check this story out. Perhaps even find out what happened to her younger sister, Linda Whitlock? Do some real police work and give us some closure instead of grief.

Posted by: D. Singh at September 22, 2009 2:59 AM

On top of the tazering which I belive is uncalled for since police back in the day knew how to handle themselves, They pulled his pants down to his stumps. And let him sit there with his john hanging out. Nothing like throwing him into an emmbarssing situation to boot.

Posted by: Copy Cat at September 22, 2009 9:02 AM

the cops where wrong for what they did to that man.. i seen the whole thing ( when they first came out to the call, to them snaching his daughter off his laps and them choke holdin him , gave him a couple punches to his side, to them taseing him and his pants down. if u where there u would have done the same thing to try to help this man butt no one could do anything butt stand there a watch, because they were cops so we all had to stand back well a helpless man was crying for help..

Posted by: A witness at September 22, 2009 2:02 PM

I wasn't there, but how do you taser a man in a wheelchair? I mean if you stand back are you afraid he will outrun your helicopters?

Whatever happened to calm discussion of the situation?

And don't police have blankets for emergencies? Those officers need minimally to be disciplined for not covering the man with a blanket!

I LIVE CLOSE TO ROCKFORD ILL. A MONTH AGE 3 OFFICERS CHASED A SUSPECT INTO A CHURCH DAYCARE AND BLEW THE GUY AWAY. THE WITNESSES SAY HE WASNT RESISTING. HE CAME OUT OF A CLOSET WITH HIS HANDS UP. THE OFFICERS SAY HE WENT FOR ONE OF THE OFFICERS SIDE ARM SO THE SHOT HIM 9 TIMES.ALL HEARSAY, BUT , I WAS WATCHING THE LIVE BROADCAST IMMEDIATLY AFTER IT HAPPENED.AND THE REPORTER ASKED ONE OF THE DAYCARE GIVERS THAT WITNESSED THIS,AND WHEN ASKED, IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO WHAT THE POLICE SAY AND HER AND EVERYBODY ELSE WERE COMPLETLY BLINDSIDED BY THAT ????.COVER-UP YOU TELL ME.HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.BUT NOW THEY HAVE WITNESSES.

mrs. thompson you must be joking!!!! really aren't you??????????????????

Posted by: m at September 24, 2009 1:45 AM

Those officers clearly abused their authority! You mean to tell me that 2 cops couldn't grab 1 arm each to cuff em and wheel him out. What were they scared of, a half leg kick, perhaps the man running over their foot. These cops lost their patience and like everybody they got pissed off! Just like OscarGallegos (2 LBPD) Orozco (1 Sheriff) and Mixon (4 Oakland PD). Now these officers probably, that's right, probalby didn't deserve to die, but their fate was decided within seconds just like the judgment used by officers when they feel deadly force is the only option.
