Arkansas Woman Expecting Two, But Not Twins! (Superfetation)

An Arkansas woman shocked both here family and her doctors when tests found she is expecting two babies, but babies that are not twins, and were apparently conceived at two different times.

Her doctors believe that Julia Grovenburg conceived her first child, and then another one several weeks later, in a rare medical occurence known as "superfetation", in which a woman basically gets pregnant again while she's already pregnant. Medical experts say this is extremely rare, and has only ever been seen less than a dozen times, but the ultrasounds look like this might be that one in a billion case!

If it is indeed one of these "double pregnancies", the babies will each have a separate due date and not be considered identical or fraternal twins. Doctors won't be able to tell for sure until after childbirth whether the Arkansas woman really was impregnated twice somehow, or there is some other explanation. Either way heere's hoping for two healthy and happy babies!

Arkansas Woman Expecting Two, But Not Twins! (Superfetation)

abc news

A pregnant woman in Arkansas surprised doctors twice over when she went in for a routine ultrasound this June. Doctors successfully located Todd and Julia Grovenburg's growing baby girl Jillian, but then discovered another smaller baby -- what could be Jillian's younger brother -- growing beside her...

I have studied this and these babies are twins. 2 babies being carried by the same mother at the same time are twins. Peiod. End of discussion.

People are generally so ignorant about twins. For one thing, most people do not have a clue in the world that ober 65% of the twins born are fraternals, meaning they are not more alike to each other siblings. But everyone envisions identicals when they think of twins and 2/3rd of the time, it just does not happen that way. My twins are actually identicals, but most are not. The gullible public will buy this story, that these babies are not twins. It is baloney.

She's having what you called FRATERNAL TWINS. PERIOD.

Posted by: Precious Pam at September 24, 2009 4:47 PM

You're a douchebag & you have no clue of what you are talking about. This is a real medical case. Perhaps you should "study" a bit more, because then you would know that twins are conceived at the SAME TIME...not several weeks apart.

Posted by: H at September 24, 2009 4:54 PM

So if you have studied this, are you a doctor? Because if you are you might want to take another look in your books. Because twins are babies that are conceived and brought into this world at the same time. You are right that they are not identical twins because they would have to be monozygotic (formed from one egg) and that they are dizygotic (formed from two eggs). But they were still conceived at different times making there due dates different and making them siblings NOT twins.

that happened with my tiwn sister and i
she was concieved first but we are still faternal twins

Posted by: Anonymous at September 24, 2009 5:06 PM

I think this is crazy!

Maybe she's an alien!!!

Posted by: susan at September 24, 2009 5:07 PM

I have to believe that the doctors in this case know what they're talking about. We all know twins are born at the same time, but the medical experts say these babies were concieved at different times and will not be born at the same time. The article even tells us the name for this type of pregnancy and that it has happen before although it is extremely rare. I am not a medical expert and I don't believe everything I hear, but I see no reason to not believe the article.

IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A WOMAN TO GET PREGNANT BY TWO
DIFFERENT MEN AT DIFFERENT TIMES WHILE OVULATING,
AND IN THIS CASE BY THE SAME MAN (BOTH VERY RARE) TWINS ARE NOT DETERMINED BY THE CARRYING OF TWO BABIES BUT BY THE CONCEPTION AS SUCH. FATERNAL TWINS ARE CONVCEIVED WHEN TWO EGGS DROP AND ARE FERTILIZED BY SPERM AT THE SAME SITTING, AND IDENTICAL TWINS WHEN ONE EGG SPLITS AND IS FERTILIZED BY SPERM, ALSO AT THE SAME SITTING SO TO SPEAK. THESE BABIES ARE NOT TWINS AND WILL BE BORN DAYS OR WEEKS APART.

Y'all are so funny! Who cares if they are twins or not! This woman is having two kids! 'Nuff said!

Posted by: Debbie at September 24, 2009 5:21 PM

I became pregnant with my boys this same way. Even though they were conceived 2 weeks apart they were born at the same time after the lungs in the younger one were mature enough for him to survive outside the womb. The older one was 39 weeks and the younger one was 37 weeks along when they were born.

Wonder if the babes will be same dad and race !

Posted by: wild oat at September 24, 2009 5:27 PM

this is a real situation and anyone that says they are twins is just plain ignorant. Twins are either 1. an egg that splits in half OR 2. two eggs that are ovulated at the SAME TIME AND FERTILIZED AT THE SAME TIME.... you dont keep the same egg weeks later NOR do you get fertilized by the same SPERM weeks later.. SIBLINGS NOT TWINS... i've studied this in my nursing school classes and there have even been situations where a lady has two kids and they have different fathers because she thought that since she was pregnant by her husband, she couldnt get pregnant by her man on the side..haha true story though

Posted by: cassie at September 24, 2009 5:32 PM

This isn't as rare as you think or believe. Both eggs could drop at the same time (left and right ovary) but only one was fertilized one night and the next night the other, they're still considered twins. Unless you were there, who would know if it was from the same moment? The trama of the birthing process will usually push both babies out of the womb one right behind the other. A lot of women ovulate from both ovaries every month. Most of the women in our family do. If it's that rare our family hit the genetic jack pot, and yes, we have twins in our family.

Posted by: Flo at September 24, 2009 5:41 PM

that's very rare. i never thought its possible to happen. it makes me say "wow"

I think all of you should learn how to spell!

Posted by: kandykahne at September 24, 2009 5:49 PM

Okay, so if two eggs are fertilized at the same time, but one of the babies develops a problem in the womb and must come out two months premature, while the other one goes full-term (thus two kids with birthdays two months apart), are they any LESS twins than two eggs fertilized a few weeks apart, but then those babies are born at the exact same time ???

Another question: Being that ultrasounds are so grainy and blurry and vague, how can they tell the embryos are a few weeks apart unless it's really, really early in the pregnancy.

How does a woman ovulate when she's pregnant? What IS it with 2009 and all these bizarre pregnancy stories that keep popping up? Between Octomom, Michelle Duggar, that lady in OHio with the wrong embryo implanted, and now this...

What next? Woman pregnant with alien?

Posted by: Kytti at September 24, 2009 5:58 PM

An ultrasound, although it is not a clear picture, takes measurements of limbs, head, heart, and many other parts to check the estimated due date. Now this second child may be underdeveloped or it actually may be that this woman's ovary produced an egg during pregnancy and was fertilized. There are many women who have their period months into their pregnancy. Regardless of the situation, I think this woman just wants what every other pregnant mother wants: to enjoy her pregnancy and receive prayers from family, friends, and perfect strangers for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. She doesn't need the general public judging or making assumptions regarding the conception of her children. I'm sure she honestly doesn't care if we call them siblings or twins, she has a great story to share with her CHILDREN and I pray for her health and her babies' health.

All you guys arguing here! this is to place opinions not to argue. this is not a school and neither are you teachers so stop correcting each other.

Posted by: Christy Salazar at September 24, 2009 9:22 PM

I'm no expert, and I'm certainly not a doctor, but I believe this is possible. Several years ago, I read of a married woman who was the victim of being raped by a black man. Eight months after the rape, she gave birth to a white baby boy which she had conceived by her husband before the rape. A month later,( nine months after the rape) she gave birth to a black baby boy. She was obviously pregnant with BOTH babies at the same time. She had a DOUBLE uterous.

Some of you...pox on you! Look it up you ignorant clones. The rest of us... enjoyed the insight. As a father of fraternals...I got it right... twice. Life is a beautiful experience... not to be taken lightly. The rest of you...go to WalMart and continue to be awed by the lights... and stop going to family reunions!

Posted by: Spanky at September 24, 2009 11:48 PM

I was reading the comments with mild interest until I got to Anonymous's slam about "being from the south". Believe it or not, most of us who live here in the south are not ignorant nor stupid. How dare you think you are smarter because you live in another part of the country! I have relatives and know people from all over and I can assure you, there are stupid people everywhere. Grow up!

I was told when I was pregnant with my TWINS 21 years ago that mine were most likely conceived about two weeks apart due to their size and gestational developmental differences. They also had two sacs. They were, and are now and will always be considered fraternal twins. And no, twins are NOT always conceived at the same time. I have also studied, read, consulted, etc on this subject. I don't see where my situation was any different, other than the fact we didn't have internet back then to make us all have our 15 minutes of fame. I hope this doesn't become a circus like Octomom.

I'm amazed at all the conflict here. To call them twins or not, just semantics. Point is, I'm a sonographer and I've been doing OB ultrasound for 18 years. Twins are common. They usually measure 1-4 days apart in size, conception probably always occurs a few hours to a few days apart (except in identicals). What I've NEVER seen in person nor any of my docs in a very busy practice is a 2 to 3 week discrepancy in size documented in the first months. Accuracy in dating a pregnancy in the first trimester is tight, only plus or minus a few days, I saw the picture in the article, these babies are legitimately 2-3 weeks different in age. It is VERY unusual for a woman to ovulate after implantation of a baby. So do you call them twins or not? Who cares, I think it's pretty cool.

They AREN'T TWINS. If each of those babies has a different father, are they still twins? Absolutely not. And there have been cases of this occurrence where each baby was separated by over 2 months. They're surely not twins then.

Posted by: Dee at September 28, 2009 2:26 PM

My sister and I have always been called twins, however, I was conceived 2 weekes before my sister and by a different man...she was conceived then we were both born on the same day, me 5 minutes before her. How do you like them apples!?

Posted by: shess at September 29, 2009 2:40 PM

What can I say but wow. Let me clear this up for the misinformed and uneducated on this matter. I'm a fraternal twin. My sister was born 5 minutes before me @4 pounds, me at 8. Both girls. All we've heard all of our whole lives is how we look nothing alike.(more like sisters)Only one guy that was waiting on our table one night aat dinner said I COULD BE A TWIN TO A GIRL HE KNEW. (TURNED OUT TO BE MY TWIN SISTER) I'm 5 foot 8, with blue eyes and my sis is 5 foot 5 with brown. I talked with a specialist in fetal ultrasound, shared the idea my mom passed down from her old Dr. back in the day that we were conceived a month apart thinking he would laugh at the idea. He said we were conceived two weeks apart. It is rare, it does happen, we are fraternal twins, she got my moms brown eyes I got dads blue. Same Dad. I hope this helps.

I have a Great Neice that is now preg. w/a boy and a girl. At her first ultrasound only one baby was detected & a wk 1/2 later the other baby was detected. By the ultrasound the boy was conceived first & then the girl. They are going to induce labor on Nov. 2, 2009, so both babies will be born on the same day. I ran across this article looking for the name when such conception takes place. Yes, twins do run in my family.
