Edward Kennedy's Successor?

Even though Edward "Ted" Kennedy has been out of the public eye for the last couple of months he still made the top of the news yesterday, as he showed his heroic commitment to the public once again by taking time even during his illness to try and make sure his Massachusetts people will be properly represented, after he's no longer able to serve them.

Kennedy sent a letter to Mass. Governor Deval Patrick asking that the state change their process for choosing a Senator's successor after he is unable to serve. Under the current setup it would take time to get a successor in place, and this would mean one less Massachusetts representative and one less Democrat in crucial votes, possibly including the big health care vote.

Edward Kennedy has of course been a key advocate on this issue for a long time, and it's a tribute to his deep commitment that he's still making moves to getting this work done, even as his battle with brain cancer, sadly, seems to be entering its final stages. Hopefully the rest of congress can learn from his persistence and courage as they work towards a solution to this issue he fought to fix for decades.

Edward Kennedy's Successor?
source

The ailing liberal leader wrote this week to his home-state governor, Deval Patrick, and state legislative leaders, asking them to alter the method by which Kennedy's successor could be chosen...The health of Kennedy, 77, has been the subject of rampant speculation in Washington. He has rarely been seen this year in the Capitol, even as the Senate has taken up one of his lifelong causes, a revision of the nation's healthcare system.

Heroic commitment? my ass. The swimmer wants to change the succession law back to the same law he asked to be changed when he thought Kerry was going to become president.
In other words bend the law to fit whatever he wants.
What a repulsive individual. And those who venerate him as a "hero" are equally repulsive.

Yes, like most of us, he has at times been a slimeball. But he has also worked diligently for health care reform, programs for the poor, etc. I believe be good he has done far outweighs the bad. We should look at ourselves before we condemn someone else, and unless we can honestly say we have led a perfect life, we should hope that all of us will be judged on the good we do, not the bad.

Sometimes an indivudual does something stupid in his youth and goes on to live the rest of his life making up for it. Been known to happen, I think Kennedy has tried to do good things for all the people no matter his roots in that more advantaged class of folks with money. Most of the folks commenting on Mary Joe...likely were not even born when that supposedly happened. I suppose they think they are very smart when it comes to public affairs esp when condemning an entire familys history. I hope to never find myself living in one of those glass houses. Godspeed Mr. Kennedy.

Absolute Power Corrupts absolutely. I am not being judgemental here, for I dont like being so.
However, no law-maker on the face of this planet Earth has ever made a law that does not serve his or her interests first. That is what all Government is about and so is Kennedy. Eventually, Law-makers barely admit their mistakes and most of them realize their mistakes when it is too late. I wish nobody no harm.

Ted Kennedy has enjoyed the privileges of money all his life including Chappaquidick but he has most certainly worked for the people of Massachusetts and the US in the decades since then. The ugly hatefulness shown on this forum reply is one of the reasons our country is in the trouble it is in. Evidently, his constituents liked what he has accomplished as they re-elected him again and again. I think he has paid for his privileges over the years with a lot of unhappiness. I hope as the end nears he finds Peace.

Yes, he has done some good during his long reign, but somehow I can't seem to forget that he's had 40 yrs of life that a young lady didn't have when he drove a car off a bridge, then went to a motel and slept off the booze. And let's not forget some of the other scrapes he got into. Still, privilage is privilage but in the end,it can't do much to stave off the inevitable appointment we all have to meet with the Reaper. It's just taken his body to arrange the meeting.

We Americans never fail, we are always so self-righteous, and complain, about everything in a unforgiving way. We get angry about politics, we don't forgive any wrong and we judge people with a mental fortitude of a serpent. Who is among us with out sin, who has never done any wrong, who has never hurt, harmed or judged another human being, let him cast the first stone. In God's eyes are we not all with some type of spot on our records. I say that we need to come on one accord for this great country and have healthcare in place that is for all Americans. Have education in place that truly edudcates and not placate individuals. Have jobs available for those who seek them and move us out of this recession. We have individuals, who go to jail, serve their time, come out a whole citizen then be judged again by their past record to keep them unemployed - try having a felony in this economy and get a job? We have people who are hurting and hungry and all we can think of is what this man has done in his past and not what he has done for others. We cannot bring back the young woman who lost her life and we know that he should have paid for that but the same people who were in political power than did not do anything. I believe by this devastating illness that justice has been served and that we need to come together to get us to be a better UNITED States of American. For all the people - equally.

I came from a third world country and use to brag to my family and friends that I am in a better place, where corrupt politicians get punished. Boy, I was soooo wrong. If you watch FOX and other channels owned by Rupert Murdoch, then, you live in a 4th world country and will never enable this country to be great again. I suggest to you that you just stick with the O'Reily's and Limbaugh's of the world so that you remain knuckle draggers.

Though I have not always agreed with the senator's ways or ideals, I would never make the hateful comments of others who've posted here.
Totally unnecessary.

WOW! What a bunch of sour grape comments...

And I don't suppose that any one of us wouldn't take advantage of that kind of respect and power to accomplish our goals before we die...

What Ted is proposing may or may not be considered fair, BUT, it is being done in the best interest of all Americans and not just the privileged few. Some people think that helping the common man who has no resources is a bad thing. That thought is as un-American as Osama bin Laden.

It is every American's duty to see to the security of our freedoms, the welfare of our fellow citizens, and to accept everyone's, and I do mean EVERYONE's, opinions and lifestyles.

That is what freedom means and THAT is what the founding fathers intended. If you don't want to live up to these expectations, gather up your family and money and get the hell out.

Making disparaging comments about someone's belief is Sooooooo UN-AMERICAN.

Ted Kennedy is a criminal who killed a young girl. He didn't report it. Then his family got him out of it. Now he is trying to circumvent the law again with his "letter" to the Govenor. WAKE UP!!! Get it straight people. He is not a hero! He should have stepped down when he knew he could not "serve" th people. Yesterday was not the day that happened. That day was July 18th 1969! Ask the Kopechne family is they think Ted is a "hero!"
He is not a hero, he a repulsive excuse for a human being and should be vilified for his actions. The day of reckoning is nigh Theodore. You are going to meet your maker, and he doesn't have a short memory!

When you look at the lives of the Kennedy Family members, they have pursued politics at any cost but just as most Celebrities live, they believe the basic rules of Law and Life don't apply to them.
Just as with JFK and RFK with Marilyn Monroe and many others, the sowed pain whilst attempting to pursue Good. As Rick Warren has described, we Live a Life that looks like a railway line and you have both good and bad, the question is does it all matter in the end, Christ died for ALL and Loves ALL, so pray for the mans soul.

It would be beneficial to discuss the current political issues omitting accusations against democrats or republicans and simply refer to the facts. In relation to Senator Kennedy I would venture to say few if any of the bloggers including myself have worked so tirelessly in our lives to bring about a better life for the poor and less advantaged in our great country. If you wish to attack someone choose the many others who have the wealth and power this man possesses and give back little or nothing to those less fortunate.

I suppose that had Hitler exterminated the Jews and started WWII and survived early in his Dictatorship and then created the Autobahn and brought Germany out of the depression later in his Dictatorship, that he too would be venerated. To believe that just because some here were not born when Mary Jo's life was taken from her makes it all right is just simply beyond comprehension. The fact that he never atoned nor took responsibility should throw a red flag out there.
As far as legislation, the fact that he wants to change a law that he pushed to enact so that he can do want he wants (do as I say, not as I do) reeks with hypocrisy. I can see our founding fathers rolling over in their graves. Do we have a monarchy where someone chooses their own successor.
Kennedy fought legislation that would have required Congress to live under the same rules that they enforce on We The People. Some hero. If you believe that he fought for the little man against the rich man, think again. There is no doubt he benefited from his legislation. I guess it's OK to fight (?) for the little man and get richer and richer at the same time.
Kennedy should have followed in the footsteps of George Washington and step down many years ago.

Privileges, money, hypocrisy, infidelity, corruption, whatever.....The Kennedy name is synonumous with these adjectives. You know what though....you dont have to support Ted Kennedy, you can curse his name all you want to if you dont agree with his political policies, lifestyle, family, etc.....But he is a human being who happens to be dying an awful death, which those of who who have lost anyone to a brain tumor have witnessed. You guys need to take yourselves out of your emotions and look at the human side....I may not be a fan of Ted or maybe even the democratic party, but that does not mean I cannot have sympathy. You guys knocking Ted (the person, not the politician) at this stage of his life are more reprehensible then any of the offenses committed during his lifetime.

What's with you Americans? Most of you behave as spoil brats. The Kennedys are not different from any other families(rich or poor). We all do good things and terrible things in life. There is always a black sheep in all families. Who are we to judge anyone? I thought that only God the Almighty has that power. About the Healthcare...Here in Ontario,Canada, Government runs the Health care system. Rich or poor you have the same, unless you personally decide to upgrade or your Employer has an upgrade insurance, that you pay for anyway through fringe benefits, which usually lower salaries.
Americans full of hatred amongst themselves, no wonder the rest of the world follow your pattern, yet, you are suppose to be leaders. Gov't healthcare is good for all. Less illnesses and better health lead to a more productive citizen. Wasted money on needless wars, are better served on Healthcare, education and Jobs. What has happened to "God Bless United States of America?" Has it gone to the dogs? Please, show compassion, forgiveness,Love, good morals and example to the Global youths who will become tomorrow's Leaders.
Those who speak ill of the Kennedy's clan as being rich and famous...Have you ever think that the rest of the poor world are thinking the same of "Big Rich America" as a push-around and unworthy of being trusted? Most Republicans as is our Conservatives here in Canada are financially well off than the average person. Rich People, generally wants you to always be in a position of inferrior, so that they keep the upper hand. As an example of Law Enforces, they never let you forget who is in control and in power.
Give Praise and thanks to the Almighty and be nice. We love you as our South Neighbours. Mary A

Senator Kennedy is NOT asking for the governor to appoint someone to his position and thereby undo a succession law he was in favor of in the first place. If some of you stone throwers would read the news a little more thoroughly you would have found that he is asking the governor only for an "interim" appointment who would also have to agree NOT TO RUN in the sprecial election that would fill his seat. The interim appointment would only be there to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during the several month interval before the special election takes place. Obviously, Kennedy is trying to make sure that the extra vote is there should a health care bill come up to vote. Love him or hate him, no one can deny the commitment that he has towards some form of universal health care. It has been his life's work. Would any of you out that who have been commited to some cause as long as he has want to do anything less?

Makes me sick to think he could possibly change the law and allow this!!
PLEASE VOTERS, donot allow this "retirement material" senator dictate from the grave.

didn't he fight hard to get the time requirements when it didn't look like he would get replaced by someone whom he didn't want (ie a republican), and now he wants the restriction removed because it would guarentee that another democrat would be replacing him. Talk about hippocrite. ok, remove the timelimit, but require a rapid special election to replace.
Politics - Sure wish there was a hunting season for politicians.

I think there are a lot of rude and insensitive people who have lost perspective on many things sadly. Kennedy's been good, he's made some mistakes. We all do.

Reading your comments sends chills up my spine!!!

For all the Kennedy Haters: If you didn't know this you should know it now. WE ARE ALL SINNERS IN THE EYES OF GOD AND WE ALL NEED FORGIVENESS FROM HIM.

Ted Kennedy made a irresponsible decision to drink and drive which resulted in the death of that young woman and what was going on between the two of them is really none of our business. It may have been manslaughter,or vehicular homocide, but murder, I don't think so. He did not set out to kill her that night. That too is between him and God not you.

Whether you want to admit it or not he has done great things for the poor and our youth in the State of Massachusetts and the rest of this country. The hateful comments that you make about a man who is dying only exposes the evil in your hearts. I find your self-righteousness and venomous words repulsive and may God forgive you.

Thank you Teddy for being the voice for those who did not have the power to speak, and could not be heard from the powers that be. We will miss you and your roar in the Senate and in the world.
God's love be with you.

Senator Kennedy should be replaced using the process that has been approved and is currently in place. If that process is faulty it should be changed after the fact. We do not live in a country where political leaders choose their successors. This is not a Dictatorship or Kingdom.
The citizens of Mass. will have opportunity to vote again as part of that process. If they want to elect someone very similar to Senator Kennedy and his views, they will do that. If not, that is part of the process. This would be a dangerous precident. Our leaders should be elected by the voters and replaced by due process if necessary.
You can't change this process mid-stream because someone does not like it-even a Kennedy.

Posted by: Kelly at August 21, 2009 11:26 AM

I can't get over how quickly people are to judge others especially when they are down, I may be wrong but I believe that those that judge are usually professed Christians. Have they all forgotten that one thing as Christians we are not supposed to do is judge others, because one day we are all going to meet our Maker and we will then all be judged. I wish you well Mr. Ted Kennedy and pray for you and your love ones always. God be with you.

I agree with badlands; you knuckleheads are missing the point as usual. The appointed person would only be temporary and could not run for the office when the election was held. You would get your new senator in due time. I think (as does Kennedy) that it is important to keep Mass. senatorial continuity during a crucial vote that he has worked tirelessly for. After that, do what you will.
Then again he may hang on and get to vote after all. I hope he does and then retires.

Posted by: Old Gray Mouse at August 21, 2009 11:40 AM

Of course, he didn't want Romney to appoint a Republican, which would have been against the wishes of the people since they had elected a Democrat. And no it would not be a dangerous precedent--it would just be how it was done before and how it is done in many states.

Ted Kennedy has done great things for those who are the least heard in this country. He didn't have to do anything--he couldn't just lived a life of leisure, but love or hate the Kennedy's most of them seem to value service whether you like they way they do it or not.
I see the typical deep thinkers are on this blog comparing Hitler to anyone they don't like. What an insult to the 8 million people who died under Nazism.

I only wish to comment on this story and not on the life of Sen. Kennedy. I don't like how this story was written. It seems to me that this is partisan politics at its best. when it wasn't a sure thing another Dem. would get Kerry's seat they changed the law, now that it is they want to change ti back..?? ow does this seem right to anybody. And the thing that is most wrong is the story portrays it as a good and noble thing..?? Does this sound ok to anybody out their whether Rep. or Dem..??

The comments here are mostly pretty disgusting even for americans, wishing death on someone ? thats pretty harsh. Death cant come soon enough for him ? Glad to see that the majority of people here walk on water and have never done anything wrong in their life time. More compassion was shown for the lockerbie bomber, than someone whom has done a lot of good for the U.S.A.

Are we nuts? Changing state law to keep a political croony happy and to keep the power of his family in the senate? This is truly insane. To the people of MA please end this absurd and sick rule of the Kennedy family. Don't you want new ideas, new people in office?

He's as corrupt as the next who's been in office tolong and has to much power. They should have term limits just like the Presedent, as should the senate. and no one should get to vote for their own raise. The people should be the only ones to say who is in office next

I am really saddened but not surprised by some of the hateful comments on this blog. I am not surprised due to the hateful energy surrounding our first African-American president. It shows the true make up of our country in this day and age. Senator Kennedy has sins like the rest of us , however, he has truly worked for the underdog even when he didn't have the same worries like the rest of us. He doesn't have to worry about the high rise of health care, but yet he is working to end others having to worry about it too. I work every day with people who desperately need health insurance and are struggling to pay their bills.Remember our God is a forgiving God, and I would bet anything that he has made his peace with God for whatever sins he may have committed. Let us pray that God will do the same for us all.

The final judge for Ted Kennedy is not one of us. We should have to walk a mile in in his shoes and experience his feelings before we make comments damning him to hell. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. If we spend the time and energy that we waste on judging others in the betterment of self.... the world would be a much better place for us all!

Posted by: Terry at August 21, 2009 12:13 PM

To all those who can not wait to cast stones(political, personal, religious or just the kind you picked up in the gutter):

Please be reminded of your own lives and those you truly know and love well.
It is the very rare individual who has led a fully exemplary life.
From the perspective of one American who is already disabled, just a few months shy of my 65th birthday, and who has lived through a very substantial portion of the "Kennedy Years" and influnce-- both in Massachusetts (while @ college - in world history class when JFK was assassinated) and through all the ups downs, good, bad, indifferent of that which is related to,or attributed to the influence of the Kennedy family. I ask you all to think. Think about what you read, think about what you hear, think about the concept of media-literacy = the ability to enounter what you read/hear and work to form a balanced, truly informed opintion; not just the ravings of ratings seekers, fringe lunatics, and those with less than honest agendas.

In the end, we will all die. Even those who have been good and kind and just and fair all (or most) of their lives. The Expression by those filled with anger, hatred, vitriol, resentment and expressing it as a hope for a cruel and abusive end for one or many who have transgressed ( in the human sense, not the "idealized organized religious sense) -- I caution you, look in the mirror; what do you see? Do you see someone who has accomplished even some small accomplishment that has benefited even a tiny portion of those who inhabit this globe?

Government of the founding fathers has, like so much of our history become idealized, polarzied and corrupted. This is not to say that those highly insightful, visionaries who helped to create the beginnings of our country were, each in their own way "perfect" -- they were just men. And if you read ( really read) your history - you will discover that so many who transgressed in some form, even profited from it -- in the end found a way to contribute to the better good.

You are free to speak your piece, thanks to our founding fathers. You are but one among many. Your voice and opinion (be it kind or cruel or just plain outrageous) are here because of those who came before. But they, too were not all perfect or all good they were merely human.

I have watched the Kennedy's and their extended family and their actions for over 45 years.
At this point in my life, I am not willing to "lump" them all together to make a sweeping uninformed judgement on a dying man - no matter how rich in land/money/power he is still a dying man.

Compassion and Kindness cost nothing. Just what you might want if you found yourself in the same situation.
As for Sen Kennedy's request -- It is my considered opinion that he has worked hard -- through it all, and perhaps because and in spite of it. He will be gone before you know it.

There will be others for you to rail against, but only because you are still here. And that is the blessing of us all -- that we are here and have the right of free speech and expression, thanks to those ingloriouos, imperfect, and yes many corrupt founding fathers.

Think. before you use that historical gift of the right to speak
Think. Before you cast those stones.
Think. How would you feel if you had made life decisions, actions that affected the lives of others.
Think.
You would want to be forgiven. You would want to be cared for. You would want to be remembered for the good ( no matter how small) that you had done.

Think.

Ted Kennedy was solely responsible, but never punished, for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. He and his friends in high places conspired to successfully cover up the facts. There was never an autopsy which could have proved Mary Jo was alive for some time after Teddy left her to die. This country cannot afford another Kennedy to inherit the the U. S. Senate.

My comments regarding a change being a dangerous precedent were in regard to the timing of the change in procedure. It would not be appropriate to make a change when someone is not happy with a possible/likely outcome that is imminent. That is like a child changing the rules in a game when they feel that they are loosing. It is not the process that is the problem it would be the timing of a change. I understand that different processes are in place in different parts of the country and that these processes change from time to time. If the state of Mass. wants to make a change they should do so, but not in the middle of a political battle. I do not want Democrats or Repulicans alike to have the power to change the rules in the middle of the game. I am not a backer of either party at this point. I am disapointed in both. I just want fairness in process. As for those of you who are making nasty comments about Senator Kennedy and his health -shame on you. I may not be a fan but certainly do not wish suffering for him or his family.

I'm appalled at the sheer venom spewing from the lips of most of the people on this site. "Ugly American" doesn't begin to cover it. They've taken 'man's inhumanity to man' to another level. It's people like those who have made their country into the massive sewer it has become. I hope all those viscious, censorious, judgmental, mean-spirited people, who obviously think they're without sin, never have to find themselves in similar circumstances as Sen. Kennedy, suffering and facing death as bravely as he can. At least he has a large loving and supportive family. Those nasty-mouthed people might find themselves in great pain, alone and miserable with no-one to hand them even a glass of water to cool parched lips. It's very sad that there are so many of them out there.

There comes a time and place were we all have to let go and let God judge. Ted Kennedy will be judge for all he has done just like the rest of us will be. The law remains in place and we continue to do as we please and not what he did for us. May God take care of Kennedy and his family according to his deeds because remember someday it will be you and I and we will also have to address God's questions why??? I wonder how many of the people making such terrible comments about Senator Kennedy consider themselves to be good (conservative Republican) Christians? You should be ashamed of yourselves! No matter how you feel about the senator's deeds (or misdeeds), it's shameful to talk about a sick man in this way. I haven't always appreciated the things he's said or done, but it's not my place to judge him.

Ted Kennedy made his mistakes. He had to live with his guilt of involuntary manslaughter. And, yes, he's lived a rich life in many ways...family, money, etc. But, he's worked hard to be the voice for our citizens to deliver benefits to the poor, create funding for education, and devote himself to healthcare.

Did anyone see the news report on the turnout in Inglewood, CA for Free Healthcare Forum? It ran for eight days from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. People turned out in droves for dental care, mammograms, PAP smears, eye exams, BP and diabetic screenings, etc., lining up as early as 3:00 a.m. The volunteer doctors and medical assistants served well over 6000 people who were able to have medical check-ups and work completed that they had put off for years because they simply could not afford the cost of insurance and care. In the end, they had to turn people away!

If Senator Ted wants to see his legacy of hope for the American people completed, he's doing the right thing. Kuddos to you Senator!

I, by the way, was alive during the Chappaquiddick days, and the loss of Mary Jo and the cover-up bothered me as I read the daily news as well. But, you can be certain the Senator has paid his dues in other ways--through humiliation, and conscience. He's had to live with that trauma for years. He committed his life to strive for Americans in need, and by now, the good he has done has outweighed the bad.

I support him fully. He also is suffering greatly now--I watched my sister pass from Stage 4 brain cancer, and it's a miserable passing. So, while we have not seen his suffering in public, believe me, you can be certain he has suffered. It saddens me to see a world so full of loathing and hate, as I read the comments above. I wonder whom amongst you lives in a glass house? So quick to throw stones. By the way, the Senator is only seeking temporary replacement until his term should end so as not to leave an empty spot in the legislature as his health continues to decline. That is loyalty to his people. Godspeed, Senator Ted.

For all you Kennedy Fans, chew on this...

Several years ago, Massachusetts had a REBUBLICAN GOVERNOR, Mitt Romney. Senator Kennedy strong armed a change in the law that would NOT ALLOW the GOVERNOR to appoint a replacement to the Senate, why? Because he would have chosen a REPUBLICAN of course. Then, he wasn't concerned about the people not being represented.

Now, here in Massachusetts, there is a DEMOCRATIC Governor, Deval Patrick. Now, Kennedy wants to CHANGE THE LAW HE PUSHED THROUGH THE LEGISLATURE!!!!!!! Because it benefits his party and, NOT BECAUSE IT BENEFITS THE PEOPLE!!!

Wake up, those of you who love Teddy obviously don't live here in MAssachusetts like I have for almost 40 years.

Posted by: Greg at August 21, 2009 1:38 PM

A person can use his life to make up for a wrong deed. However, he should not use his life of wealth and privilege to attempt to make up for his cowardice in action. He sat on the bank of that creek and knew that girl was dying and walked away. For those of you who are willing to forgive him that, ok. However, it certainly makes him unfit for high office. Except in Mass., where they do not care what you do if you are a Kennedy.
His brothers did a lot of good, but they spread misery and heartache within their own families like poison. They were a bunch of rich, arrogant snobs who thought the world was theirs for the taking. They had some ideals and at some level, I guess that helps, but they were not nice people. They treated their families and wives horribly. What do you think of a man who gives his word and then breaks it with impunity? Is it ok to give your word to your wife before God and ignore it when you want? Is that different than when you place your hand on the bible and take the oath of office? Should you lead the world's most powerful country? Is it too much to ask that our leaders keep their word and honor their families? I guess Bill Clinton proved that is not the case.

Anyway, I always wonder about these Democrats who push these agendas on the people and know that they will never participate in them personally. Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy will never have emergency treatement in a government run clinic. Their kids and grandkids will never go to a public school in an inner city. Who is kidding who?

I am tired of being ruled by rich men's sons. Ted Kennedy is a moral reprobate who lived a life of splendor and privilege and has the gall to act like he has values and cares. He is not the only one, but he is the most glaring example. He is dying a horrible death, but I wonder if he would trade it for a death by drowning in a freezing tidal creek at night. I don't think so. I think he will die like he lived, a coward trying to make everyone think he has accomplished something. He did nothing but live on his daddy's money and the largess of the stupid people of Mass.

Although he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and privileged, he fought the good fight for minorities and his family paid for it dearly. I have never seen so much tragedy in one family. His pain and suffering is a witness to his steadfast democratic beliefs that helped the less privileged. He is one of the last great heroes that made life better for the less privileged. His beliefs transcended both rich and poor and nothing would stop him from obtaining equality for all. He paved the road for President Obama to make this county one Nation, one America, and one People in which we stand proud, tall, and united.

Massachussetts just changed the way they get a replacement senator from being appointed by the governor to being elected in a special election. Why? Because Teddy was sick and they had a republican governor. They were terrified that Teddy would die and the governor would appoint a republican in his place. Now they have a democrat governor, so they want to change back to having the governor appoint a replacement.

Hmmmm,
Taking from the rich and giving it to the poor to get the poor to vote for you without creating a sustainable environment for real growth and job creation isn't really doing much Mass. or the country as a whole. Read this guy's record and then make your decision.
Also, I would like someone to give me ONE example of when creating a socialized system of ANYTHING made it better.

Posted by: Shelby at August 21, 2009 2:44 PM

I also find it ironic that this guy's name may be attached to a health care reform bill. No hospital can help you if your date leaves you in an upside-down car under water.

In case Americans do not realize the damage that lilberal socialists like Splash Kennedy have done to our country, try getting educated to history. Every single socialist nation has failed and those that have not taken back their countries were probibited from do so by dictators like Kim Il, Castro and Chavez who prevent it from happening.

In science when an experiment continues to fail, the conclusion is that the design is faulty and new approach is tried. Like Einstein said "Only idiots, liberals and socialists keep doing the same thing and expecting different results". To this end, it appears that liberalist/socialism is a mental disease because facts escape their thought processes.

Teddy is no lion of liberalism, he is just another guilt-ridden upperclass socialist who advocates hand-outs rather than hand-ups (i.e. jobs and self-respect). No one every got out of poverty by standing in line at the Welfare Office!!

Posted by: paul at August 21, 2009 2:52 PM

OK lets get past Ted's past that was a long time ago. I am not a politically oriented person but what Ted is wanting is for his state to be represented continuously in the event of his demise. I see nothing bad about this. If you lived in Massachusetts would you not want someone appointed to the Senate temporarily until a vote could be taken to assure your State was represented. I haven't seen anywhere that he is wanting a particular person appointed, if that was the case then yes that would be wrong. But from what I have read he just wants the State to be represented until an election can be done. I think that would be the reasonable and logical thing to do regardless of which state or who was asking. The presidency is filled temporarily by the vice president so why all the fuss. Common sense should prevail here and all states should have continuous representation in the case of a government official stepping down, dying or whatever. I don't understand why any governor wouldn't want that for his state nor why in the world this is raising such a ruckus. People you need to get over it!

The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Joseph Kennedy was an absolute scoundrel and most of his children followed in his footsteps. The stranglehold the Kennedy's have on power in this country should end with Teddy's death. He is a scoundrel like his father and denigrates the patriots that fought to make America a viable Republic. Good riddance to those bastards.

Posted by: Anonymous at August 21, 2009 3:00 PM

Ted Kennedy is the last of the Kennedy men and the greatest among them. He has tirelessly championed the poor and the disabled. To bring up Mary Jo shows an infantile mind. Her death was unfortunate but has nothing to do with this situation. Ancient history. I admire Senator Kennedy for trying to make sure his support and vote is counted in a yes vote for the very needed healthcare reform we need in this country. God Bless you Ted Kennedy and thank you for your years of service to our country.

I suppose those of you who are condemning Senator Kennedy for his misdeeds are some of the same who are mourning the death of Michael Jackson, the drug addict, and truly believe that O.J. Simpson did not slaughter his wife and Ron Goldman. Michael Jackson is better off dead - one less junky on Planet Earth - and O.J. is exactly where he belongs - behind bars - but unfortunately, not the slaughter of his wife and Mr. Goldman. You are also probably applauding the govenment of Scotland for releasing the savage who was responsible for the downing of the plane over Lockerbee, Scotland - because the rotten scumbag has cancer & should be allowed to be with his family in his final days. So much for the opinions of all of you who are perfect - you must feel sooo SPECIAL!!

I agree that this is a slimeball attempt to change the law to suit his and the rest of the socialized medicine interests. Fortunately, it looks like the legislators in Massachusetts (almost all liberals) see through Ted "hic" Kennedy's sleaze and will not participate in changing the law.

Posted by: Walt Cederholm at August 21, 2009 3:22 PM

For those so ready to throw stones, I don't think that Ted Kennedy is the only member of the Senate to have committed some outrageous wrongs. I seem to remember that when John McCain was a POW in Vietnam, he had a different wife than he does now. When she had an accident that severly disabled her, she kept it a secret from him because she did not want him to worry about her. He rewarded her by running around on her and finally divorcing her, proclaiming "she wasn't the woman he married". He married Cindy 1 month after the divorce was final.

And then there's Newt Gingrich, who dumped his cancer-stricken 1st wife. When his pastor criticized him for not supporting his two kids, he left the church. Newt dumped 2nd wife after cheating on her with the Congressional aide who is now his 3rd wife.

Will we ever know what was erased from George W. Bush's past by his rich family?

However, let's not point fingers, let's just say that maybe we need to judge our elected officials on their performance in office. Edward Kennedy has continuously worked for healthcare legislation and those who have no voice in the political system. All of us who have made mistakes should have done as much to redeem ourselves as he has.

Posted by: Kathy in Orlando at August 21, 2009 3:31 PM

Ted Kennedy's wife should have been with him the night that he drove off that bridge everybody knows he had no business having "Mary Jo" with him that night. It is such a shame that our congress & senate is made up of so many of these lowlife types.

Posted by: james w hall at August 21, 2009 3:39 PM

Wow! The level of passion that the Kennedy name still provokes is quite impressive. I think for all their wealth and privilege this clan has paid a very heavy price indeed. As for their sins, I am in no position to judge. I wonder if the Kennedy sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers would have traded in that privilege for just one more day spent with those family memebers who had fallen. Judging by the Kennedy family creed to help the poor and dispossessed, I think the answer is obvious. The American god is found on the dollar bill, what happened to the American heart?

My real concern is watching Ted and the rest of his family over the years they NEVER do anything that does not benefit themselves or their special interest groups. No to law change. My mother, my her soul rest in peace, would be smiling up in heaven to know good old Teddy is getting what God feels he deserves.

Posted by: rob at August 21, 2009 4:17 PM

well this just shows that you can't ever get rid of a senator even if you don't like him. The senate as a whole could be tagged as one huge oligarchy. its almost impossible in some states to change senators. of course you could vote them out but then you run into lobbyists, who don't want to go through the trouble of having to buy off a new senator. so you get the senators who are in power for along time and die in office.

Posted by: anonymous at August 21, 2009 4:25 PM

Term Limits and a ban on all lobbiests will automatically eliminate anyones ability to live the way our elite politicians do today. If Ted or anyone was such a great public servent they would pursue there ideals regardless of being a politician. To prove the point show us one politician that has campaigned there entire career on Term Limits and no more Lobbies..you won't find any including Obama!

Who are you people kidding its always been about power and money, even for Ted!

Well, I for one to do not like or dislike Mr. Kennedy more or less because he is ill. Who knows what his relationship is with his Creator? It may be good and right by now. Hope and pray it is but wow, all these gushy comments about Love, God, Forgiveness, “last of the great heroes, -nothing would stop him from obtaining equality for all,” in regard to Ted Kennedy - I’m amazed, if not astounded!! I always believed that you guys thought he WAS GOD or that the name KENNEDY WAS SYNONYMOUS WITH GOD. I guess you better not throw “god” off the train!!

Not casting stones (as some say) but it is just so - the name KENNEDY in some parts calls to mind ideas of mafia- un-convictable crimes of the rich and famous and reminds us of people like Marilyn Monroe, places like Chappaquiddick. Be forgiven Ted and live in peace as we would pray for out own selves. It is not so much Ted Kennedy or the Kennedys who should be faulted - but the ones who enabled them to be elevated to such a position that they are and were not held accountable in the same degree as their fellow man.

I stand to be corrected, however it seems to me that the well heeled crowd that is forever championing the little guy and the less fortunate in society, is quite often a member of the same group that preyed on just those same people to amass the huge fortunes that cushion them from the realities of the working class. I am not advocating socialism or the next step along that way, communism, but it does seem very hypocritical to me that people like the Kennedy's, Carnegie, Rockefeller etc used so many people along the way to accumulating their wealth.

Senator Ted Kennedy is human like the rest of us. He has been the most effective senator on the hill.

If President Obama wants to thank Ted for his support during the 2008 campaign he will pull every rabbit out of hat and get the public option passed in the health cre reform bill.

Posted by: Michael Shea at August 21, 2009 5:32 PM

Mr. Kennedy is always looking for a loophole. First he proposed the legislature to change the law 5 years ago so a Republican would be barred if Kerry were to win the presidency, now he wants to take it back so the cards are once again stacked to favor the Democrats. It's unethical, immoral and un-American and you cannot have it both ways.

Thank goodness I'm not from MA. I can't believe you folks have let this man reign all these years. This is a good example of why term limits make sense. I don't believe throwing your status and weight around is the way to govern.

It never ceases to amaze me on how far one party will go to bend or change the rules for thier own gain. There is a law in place and why should it be changed? It is there for a reason. Be careful because the party in power today might not be the party in power 4 yrs from now. Kennedy is only 1 man and not above the law and rules of this Country. Democrates be careful of what you wish for today it might come back to bite you 4 yrs from now. Kennedy has no right to ask that law be changed to suit his parties needs. Would he be doing this if the Republicans in office I think not!!!! That is what is wrong with politics today corruption and greed. By the way do you think Kennedy has public or private heathcare. Medicare for the Senator. Yea right. What not good enough for him though. Just the best corruption and money can buy. Good bye Mr. Kennedy and bye the way leave my healthcare alone.

OMG!!! Some of you people on here are so freaking full of yourselves that you don't take the time to read anyone else's comments (ie my previous post, Old Gray Mouse and Oklahoma's) so you just plow ahead spewing your hate and opinions without knowing the facts. If you dislike Kennedy for his political views or his past sins, fine. Certainly you are entitled to voice your opinion(s). The discussion, however, is supposed to be over the issue of Kennedy trying to change a law which he helped put in place to determine what happens if a US Senate position becomes vacant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during a senator's term in office. Kennedy is NOT TRYING TO CHANGE THE LAW!!! For those of you with short attention spans, read this again. He is NOT TRYING TO CHANGE THE LAW. His letter only asked that an interim person be appointed for the 5 month period before a special election is held. That person who is appointed CANNOT RUN FOR THE OFFICE. That person is only there to be able to vote for the Commonwealth's interests during that time (and of course for the health bill should it come to a vote). Since some of you are so concerned here about Kenndy changing the law, understand this: Kennedy is NOT ASKING TO CHANGE THE CURRENT LAW. THERE IS NO LAW ON THE BOOKS WHICH WOULD PROHIBIT SUCH AN INTERIM APPOINTMENT. There is no law for or against what he is requesting. The current law only says that an election must be held within the 5 months to fill the vacant seat. The interim person Kennedy is asking for would have no benefit from the appointment as they could not run for the office themself. Since I am from Massachusetts (and have voted for more Republicans than Democrats in my lifetime), I do not want a 5 month period where my state is not represented in the Senate. Whatever state you may be from I'm sure you want full time representation for your state while other Senators are out there getting pork barrel projects for their states. So one more time for the knuckle draggers out there: WHAT KENNEDY IS REQUESTING WILL NOT CHANGE ANY LAW, BREAK ANY LAW OR DO AWAY WITH ANY LAW!! THE LAW HE HELPED PUT IN PLACE WILL STILL STAND and the voters of Massachusetts will still get to vote for someone 5 months after the office is vacated. Jeeeesssshhhh!!!

How cruel so many of you are. Are you Christian? If so remember Jesus said "Judge not least ye be judged; condemn not least ye be condemned". Senator Kennedy is dying. He will be judged by a higher power than any of you, and all the good he has done to try to help those less fortunate than himself will be weighed against that awful mistake he made 40 years ago. God also warns us in Exodus not to rejoice in the death of any of his children whatever we think of them

For those who say he did all of his so-called great deeds and that repays his murderous disgression; I say he has spent much of his adult life in the pay-back mode. Oviously to no avail for his last days will be painful and horrifing for he faces his greatest fear there is an afterlife and no amount of prayer prevents him from facing his accuser. Today, even he would not have walked away with a gee whiz I said I am sorry.

Hey, Senator Kennedy and Gov Deval Patrick - if there's no law have an election immediately.
Kennedy just wants an anointed successor now that he doesn't have to worry about Mitt Romney appointing someone he doesn't like.

Kennedy mak have done much (liberal - working class, downtrodden people) some good but it's overshadowed by his killing Mary Jo Koepeckne at Chappaquiddick and refusing to own up like a man and instead hiding behind his and his families station.
On a smaller point with all his green grandstanding he still refused wind farms off the coast of Cape Cod because he was afraid of boats running into them (huh?) more like ruining his view from Hyannis Port. What a hypocrite.

Isn't there enough hate in the world? We live in the greatest country in the world but yet we still find things to complain about. It is so sad. Why can't people put down their poor attitudes and funnel that energy into keeping our country great and celebrating those who have and will work hard to contribute for the greater good? Doesn't the constitution start "We the people..." What ever happened to the "We"? Do you want the constitution to state well if you are a conservative then this and if you are liberal then this. It is all garbge. Pointing fingers and complaining is a huge waste of time, energy and resources. Why can't we all just get along?

I would have Ted Kennedy sign a legal paper that he has to step down from being Senator just as soon as someone could be elected. That way the people of Massachusetts would choose who they want to fill his shoes. You don't need to have a situation like they had in Illinois and New York State. Mr Kennedy is a good example of why we should have term limits for Senator's and the Congress.

I am a republican and conservative and have never been a supporter of Ted Kennedy but the man is dying a pretty bad death and so many of you are kicking him while he's down. My gosh, so much hatred in some of your hearts. I am not happy where the country is, and I beleive it has been a cascade effect since we took prayer out of schools. Our founding fathers were seeking religious freedom and founded our country on Godly principles. So let God judge Ted Kennedy, your choice was to vote him out of office and that didn't happen. He made a terrible decision to drink and drive and it cost a young woman her life but chances are she made the same decision he did.Every one answers for there actions, and having so much hate and nastiness in your hearts will bring you to an early grave.

I am sorrow he is dying of brain cancer, I wish noone would have to go through any type of horrible disease, but that does not give him the right to manipulate government to suit his personal needs, even on the virge of dying. The laws were set to protect the people from just this sort of thing.. The very thing he fought against when he thought Kerry was going to win. The Honorable Senator Edward Ted Kennedy and his family have fought the good fight for the underpriviledged and marginalized people in America, especially for people of color. I salute Senator Edward Kennedy for his compassion, humanity, and his fight for what is right, and never backing down. For all the people who are spewing hatred and unrelentless judgements against Senator Kennedy, ask yourself what in your conscience and self do you hate so much that you have so much venom. What kind of legacy do you have? What kind of legacy do your ancestors have? After all, this country is built on lies, greed, genocide, slavery, and racism. Before you judge a single man for a serious lapse in judgement because of the disease of alcoholism, consider how he has helped shape this country to open the doors of opportunity for people from all walks of life. The only thing I regret about Senator Kennedy is that he doesn't have a 100 more years to live. With that, he should choose the successor he needs to continue the good he has done for American and all her colorful children. Why shouldn't he choose a successor, aferall wasn't George H. Hatred is still rife in America as is shown by the comments of most in this forum. Anyway i wish Mr. Kennedy peace as he departs public life.
I am in JA cheering on my country man Usain Bolt and the team - Kennedy and many other whites like him help to give black people a voice and equal opportunity in the world, an immense contribution to civilization. Whatever his faults I WISH HIM GOD'S BLESSING.

There is not one thing in the world honorable about Ted Kennedy or his family. They have raped this country for years and are low life crooks, bootleggers, and murderers. The entire family's ill gotten gains have allowed them to take the "high road" to advocate socialist reform (not unlike Lenin and Stalin) when, in fact, they could care less about the average person. Not one of them have ever done a day's work in their life. I respected the President, John Kennedy, and his contribution to our country in WWII, until hearing of his infidelity with people such as Marilyn Monroe. How about Caroline who wanted Senator Clinton's seat and had absolutely no qualifications for the job? When is this nation and the state of Mass going to realize what the bunch from "Camelot" have done to us? I give credit to one member of the family, Eunice, who sincerely cared about those less fortunate. Otherwise, the Kennedy name is a blight on this country. This country will be well served when Ted Kennedy and the arch hypocrit, Robert Byrd, meet their maker.

I cannot go along with the strong slurs of this man even if they are true. The man is dying and my hope for him is that he truly knows Christ and will spend eternity in heaven. If he has not submitted to Christ then he surely will pay for that one unforgiveable sin. If you look at the records and beliefs of his brother John and Robert it is clear that they would have been very disappointed in their brother Ted and the type of policies he has come to believe in. Many speak of the many great things he has done. Name one for me please, other than things that have lead this nation down a Socialistic track. As to the medical I do not believe in it at all. Why should we go the route of Canada and other nations where their medical programs are failing miserably. I agree all should have medical. Right now 78% of Americans do. Of the 22% that dont 63% of those make over $50,000 a year and just choose not to get it. 22% are illegal aliens and have no right to it. The remaining 15% should have it provided so long as they are not capable physically or mentally of being gainfully employed which is about 34% of that 15%. Let the government provide for them and them only and leave the rest of the industry alone. Then pass a tort reform so that Doctors dont have to pay $300,000 in insurance a year because lawyers want to sue all the time and we end up paying the cost in higher medical costs. Does it not seem odd that the bulk of the politicians that want this are attorneys?

Posted by: Pap at August 21, 2009 9:31 PM

Speaking of lawyers, all should be banned from running for national office. The only occupational group that has a lower approval rating by the American public than lawyers, are politicans. Could someone explain to me why our politicians are always thought of as crooks, scoundrels, and worse? Why do we re-elect them? Simple, they bring home the goods like Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd. Byrd, by the way, is the world champion pork producer and has systematically voted for anything that will benefit his stare, W.V., regardless of the cost to the nation. To show I am not partisan, Ted Stevens was the second best hog with the former Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott running a close third. These people have never cared about anything except for "Earmarks" for their state. Does that say anything about term limits? Citizens of this country, wake up, we have a bunch of disfunctional old men and women spending us into poverty. How about the bridge to nowhere?

I think Senator Kennedy has again and again repaid his debt for the unfortunate incident in which he made a bad decision. Haven't we all made decisions that we regret? I certainly have. I am sure that he lives daily with his regretful decision. In the meantime, he has done so very much for all of us. Yes, all of us. Where is the Christian in us? God makes the judment call, not us. I personally feel that Mr. Kennedy is a good Christian, and a good fellow American.

I came to US a decade ago, now I am a citizen, and I still have language barriers. I am sad with the comments against a person who is in very bad health condition . I never heard something like that in my 3th world country. We need pray. I pray for Ted Kennedy who has good reputation not only in my country, and I pray for all good and bad people.God is more interested in the bad. God is waiting. Look for Him.

I will not condemn Senator Kennedy for what happened in the past at Chappaquiddick but I will say that him and every other Democrat and Republican that have been in office for the last 20 to 30 years should not be esteemed for their work. I havent seen anything that has come out of the House and Senate over the past 30 years in which Senator Kennedy has been in, that has been for the American people. I have seen him and every other one that has been in that long accumulate more wealth at the expense of Americans while America has deteriorated. All Ive seen them do is support banking and business and industries and say the heck with the American people. As an example if President Obama can order the Automobile industry to make cars with more mileage how come this wasnt done sooner? Look at the recent credit card bill passed where it is supposed to protect the American people BUT we have to wait a year to let this happen and in the meantime if you own a credit card, look how fast the companies are changing their terms on their credit cards that you own. How about the Housing Industry. Congress passes laws to benefit certain people for them to get housing easier and look at the people in charge of them Freddie Mac and Mae and how they were cheating and robbing the programs for a long time and who is now responsible for paying all the millions of dollars they lost? Not the Congress who passed this bill. I can site one incident after another where the American people have been lied to and cheated on by the Congress and Senate and yet we still keep voting people the same people in every year like Senator Kennedy and all they do is sit back and make more money with all these Political Action Committees and turn their back on the American people. That's the main point of this all. How many Congressional and Senatorial personnel really support or care for the American people. Look at Nancy Pelosi. She was happy when the American people was sitting back and letting them run the country the way they saw fit and passing all these laws that only helps them and then when Americans start voicing their opinions, they are called UnAmericans. Nazis. Why, because we are tired of putting up with their lies and constantly passing bills for the betterment of banks and companies and businesses at the expense of the American people and we are finally sticking up as a Nation and letting them know we arent putting up with this stuff anymore. So, as a Nation this stuff needs to stop. Quit letting the same people get in and sit stagnate while the American people are losing their integrity and backbone while also having to pay more out of their pockets. Lets pass a law that if the Congress and Senate keep passing laws that don't include the voice of the American people in there, then they should take responsibility when something happens. On a side note, Im also tired of reading about how the economy has started to get better and how low the unemployment rate is. How does the Government know this? If you have ever been unemployed you know that you draw and unemployment check and have to report to unemployment office to get your check. What happens to you though, when you run out of benefits and still can't find a decent job? Are you still counted in the Unemployment stats? No, they could careless about you then since you arent getting unemployment benefits but you are still unemployed right? How does the Government count you? They don't. So the Government is lying when they tell you there is such and such percentage of unemployed people. There is a heck of lot more unemployment than what the Government wants to report. I can tell you even in my own hometown I see more and more people going hungry and eating at the soup kitchens but where are the Congress and Senate while all of this is going on? Then the other thing is why do they report this to you trying to make everything look good? Because the Government pays a lot of money to Americans for Social Security Benefits and Government Retired personnel and the Consumer Price Index dictates what of a rate increase you get every year. Basically, the bottom line is we have been lied to again and we are being cheated by the Government. But again, these are the people we vote in office. Take a look at the person you voted in office and just sit back and see how long it takes for them to forget about you once they are elected or reelected. They go to Washington and fall in love with the money they make with these Political Action Committees and say the heck with the American people and then all the things you were told they were going to do for you is all forgotten. Just like all those things Senator Kennedy promised but never came through on.

I am so saddened to hear such mean and hateful comments about Senator Kennedy, he has worked hard for those that have no voice, he didn't have to spend his days working for those less fortunate but he did, how judgemental and insensitive and shame on you folks that wish him ill and such a sad time in his life, where's the forgiveness, have you never made mistakes, and if you have, what have you done in your life, does the good you have done outweigh the bad? I think Senator Kennedy has done so much good, he deserves forgiveness for his mistakes and a grateful thanks from all of us he has served. I wish him and his family peace and comfort.

All of you defending this scumbag, and saying "we all make mistakes". Would you say the same about someone that killed YOUR daughter, or sister, or mother? Are we to forgive murderers and rapists because we too have sinned, because we too have lied and possibly cheated or stole? Why have prisons and jails, if we are to forgive and forget? Maybe think before you speak, it makes you seem just a little bit more intelligent!

Let's be real. Senator Kennedy is the worst kind of hypocrite. In fact his hypocrisy knows no bounds. He get the law changed in Mass. when he felt Gov. Rhomney might appoint a republican (if Kerry would have won the Presidency) and now wants it changed back, because he is afraid that the people of Mass. might actually elect a republican to fill his seat. He wants it both ways. Is he afraid of the people of Mass??? It looks and smell like it. I do not wish the man ill, he will account for his sins to God. However, let us all realize, hypocrisy they name is Kennedy.

Can you get more corrupt than the Kennedy clan? Facts don't lie. Look them up.

Bootleggers, pro-Nazis before WW2, purchased a presidency- and then there's TED. He killed a woman- never admitted/paid for crime. Pulled strings and got his EXPIRED license backdated so he was in the clear for the crime. Long time alcoholic with multiple offenses- swept under the rug. He is against the 2nd amendment but... had bodyguards with ILLEGAL machine guns protecting him in DC- again, swept under the carpet. No charges filed. Millions of dollars in taxes- unpaid due to "clout" and trust funds.

Yep, a real man of the people. He looks out for everyone. Guess I don't understand all the pro-Kennedy supporters. There are both good/bad politicians out there and TED is about as bad as they get. Time for some new, honest blood in Washington- be it lib or conservative.

Although I don't agree with Sen Kennedy's position on most issues... I will let the Ultimate Judge decide his fate.

However, both Canadians and USA people are ill informed regarding the many different aspects of health care on both sides of the border. Having moved to Canada within the past two years... I have found the practice of health care mixed. Some areas the care is as good as the USA. In other areas, the standards of care are vastly inferior. To quote one specialist, "That procedure is not done here in Canada. We wait for your condition and symptoms to become worse until we treat it. Even though your specialist in the USA recommended a follow-up in a year... We don't and won't offer those diagnostic tests under OHIP (Ontario Health Plan)."

In other cases, emergency treatment rooms people wait and wait and wait for treatment of broken fingers, etc. and are sent home and told to come back later. ... By the time they are treated they have permenant damage to nerves and lose the use of their fingers.

Old people wait in queues, and die waiting for treatment.

The unwritten rule here is "if you know the right people...you can still get good / quick care particularily if you are a relative of a doctor." Those cases are not "officially treated" or the doctor would get in trouble. There are ways to work the system for "cancelled appointments."

Ever hear the phrase:
"SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS" George Orwell - Animal Farm.

The US congress and the President has their own insurance program, their own retirement program, and their own specialized health care program.

I say, "what is good for all the people, should start with the "so called leaders of the people".

The Canadian system is not the solution. The current US system is flawed too. However... the US system does provide the best health care to people both rich and poor. People on Medicaid get top notch care even when they cannot afford a penny. I have helped several people apply... It is true that you have to be fairly poor in most states to qualify.

If I had a choice...and I don't...since I live and work in Canada... I would still take the US system with it's flaws...even in its current state.

The bottom line is desparate Canadians will often cross the border to get treatment in the USA when all other options fail them.

PSA tests for Prostate Cancer -- are not a standard treatment... They are an extra charge not covered by OHIP. There have been many scandals by unqualified personnel and labratories "botching" tests in Canada resulting in death. Letting the "government" manage health care when they have a vested interest in reducing costs everywhere they can... is like having the Fox guard the hen house at midnight while everyone is sleeping. There are plenty of American's and Canadian's sleeping on this issue. The taxes are VERY HIGH in Canada. You sometimes don't get what you pay for. You pay very high taxes and get good to inferior health care.

You need to remember what goes around comes around it will catch up with you or a family member so day. Be very careful what you wish upon others and look deep into your own soul and see if that is how you would like you or a family member to be treated.I hope you ask God for your forgiveness because someday you will be standing before him trying to justify your answers. May God Bless the Kennedy's in there time of need. May God Bless this world and the people in it we sure need it.

Senator Edward Kennedy could do one brave thing for America before he dies he could bring the truth and the limelight to what really happened in American History of President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy he know's what happened to his brothers and John F Kennedy Jr. he has been keeping it a secret for the fear of his own life, but now that he is dying he could spill the beans if he is brave enough to tell the truth !

It is ashamed that this one person has sold their soul to the devil for such a little price. When God wants you to go, it is time to go. You are not the controller of your life. God controls your destiny and Mr. Kennedy has been given his chance to ruin America. Fortunately, right before he is able to put the finishing touches on the fate of many innocent Americans by helping to usher in a horrible healthcare system that we all will be forced to live by in the future, the dear Lord has come to our rescue and taken his chance away. He has called his number and taken him out of control. When will America see that the Lord Jesus Christ is in charge of our lives and not us? He is the one that allows people to be in positions of leadership; whether good or bad to fulfill His purpose. These people feel that they are invincible and can control everything. However, soon they find out as Kennedy has, that in just a few months they have been nothing but pawns in the devils hands and now their short lives are almost over. I do not believe that the law should be changed on a whim. I do not believe that Kennedy should be considered a hero, because his is not and never was. He is just a man who has been lead astray by the devil and should now be preparing to meet his maker. I feel nothing but sorrow for people like this...and I always will. What a waste of a 77 year life that could have been used for good.

Egads!!! No wonder the world hates America with how hateful and vindictive people are. For those that wish or are happy Ted Kennedy to die - there have been a great many hateful, mean, people on the right - And some were even in Congress. Why not get off your racist, death wishing asses and do something - such as charity work, help build roads or houses for those that need it.
What if someone in your family was ill and needed help? The Kennedys have done lots of good things for America. Eunice Kennedy Shriver FOUNDED the Special Olympics back in the 1960s. Geeze.. I wonder how many people who 'hate' the Kennedys should be grateful for what Eunice and others in her family have done. You do not see many people from the Cheneys or Bushes or Karl Roves doing things to help America out.
Hmm.. Glancing more through the comments above - BITE ME.. JESUS has DONE NOTHING for me nor America. Nowhere does it say I have to accept a prophet as a savior in order to live and breathe here in America. Jesus is not in charge of my life - only G-d, myself and people around me. Do not put jesus ABOVE G-D, that is against the FIRST Commandment. And if do not like my thoughts, I am sure the one true G-d will probably put Bush, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney in a Hell for their destruction of America - sending Troops to fight a war for oil, allowing companies to outsource their jobs, letting oil companies gouge us on their prices, destruction of the environment, etc.
Byte me if do not like these thoughts.
