Charles Perez, Gay Anchorman Fired (VIDEO)

Miami news anchor Charles Perez has, in his own words "committed career suicide" by filing a discrimination lawsuit against his TV channel WPLG, who has since fired him.

Perez, who is openly gay, and best known for his daytime talk show years ago (as seen in the video below) said he felt that he was being demoted and pushed to the sidelines after his orientation became well-known, and that he had to take the risk of a lawsuit because the alternative was having his career sabotaged by prejudice and discrimination.

In an essay posted on the Daily Beast, Perez wrote of a climate of fear at the channel, with management wanting to sweep his identity under the rug, and also described how fear led to other forms of self-censorship:

"The news business has become a place of fear, where principle and the news have become the casualties and ratings and dollars the prizes. A perfect example: In the runup to the war in Iraq, Mohamed El-Baradei, the top man looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, stood in front of a dozen microphones in Paris and announced that there weren't any. It was a front-page story in Paris, London, Moscow, and Tokyo. It was buried in The New York Times. I, however, read it.

I went to one of my bosses at Miami's Fox affiliate, WSVN, and said, "We have to run this. This is big!" He said, "Charles, that's not what our advertisers want to see." We never ran it."

We don't know all the details of this case yet, but we hope the time will come soon when being gay won't be newsworthy at all, and everyone can feel free to be themselves without fear of discrimination or prejudice. If his charges are accurate they should be dealt with decisively.

Bottom line, I believe they sold me out as soon as my being gay became too widely known. It made them uncomfortable and made me, in their eyes, less advertiser-friendly. They'd demoted me two weeks earlier from main weekday anchor to weekend anchor. It was a move I quickly recognized was leading to the door, and I wasn't prepared to watch my career circle down the drain...

Where I live in RI quite a few of the news personalitiies are openly gay...even the mayor of our capital city is gay. Who cares. People who do the news are entertainers just like anyone else in the industry and I find it hard to believe that he is being discriminated against. Sounds like sour grapes to me, maybe he should look at his job performance and ask if he is doing the best job for the company...gay or not. It sounds like he might be the one making the issue out of it.

Ow, well, advertising $$$ is the name of the game. It's not like you are some kind of icon or anything, you're just a talking head. Just maybe, it's you, not your orientation. If they banned every gay in Hollywood there wouldn't be very many left in the entertainment industry. I don't think it's because you're gay.

When you're on TV or film you become a marketing and advertising product. Networks are essentially selling 'you' to the public. In order to know what sells to the public you must know what they have an apetite for, first rule in marketing, "know your audience". Rightly so if your audience is gay men, than market to gay men (by all means). But if you are set up in away to market your looks, charm, and style to the public at large, the larger public is not gay. The larger public is the larger public is whoever is watching, perhaps the network did not feel the larger public was gay men, and as such was well withing their right to cancel the show. Human Resouces 101.

what's worse, a robber with a knife or a gay guy with a chipped tooth?

After reading this story I was all ready to impersonate a redneck homophobe with a comment like "Send the queer back to Cuba". But seeing the posts out here are really thoughtful and analytical to some degree, I won't. I agree with Wendy, perhaps this guy is making an issue out of this hoping to make lotsa' $. There's a lot of money to be made in discrimination cases.

Oh Great Karnak, what is your prediction? It'll be settled out of court (75%) or go to the District Court of Appeals.

Could not possibly care less if this fella is Gay, Straight, Bi. What concerns me is that he is just realizing that it is about the ratings and money. Once you get past T-ball it's all about the dollars no matter what...no matter where...no matter when. WAKE UP ... LIFE ISN'T THAT EASY!

PS Frisco and Key West might be gay friendly, but it's all about the money there also.

Why is someone's sexuality still an issue? Doesn't everyone know someone who is gay? I hope he takes them for everything. It is 2009, time for people to get over it. Keep fighting Mr. Perez even when you feel like giving up. If we spend as much energy loving each other as we do judging, the world would be a much better place.

I think anywhere in the world you are hired to do your job, not to let people know about your sexual orientation, I am glad he was fired, maybe he should go and cry with Perez Hilton, and yes people we are in 2009 and people won't get over with the openly gay people not now not in a hundred years!!
