Ben Bernanke ID Theft: Wife's Purse Stolen

Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke has become an ironically high profile victim of ID theft, after his wife's purse and wallet were stolen.

The info in his wife's stolen purse apparently let these thieves set up to use the Bernanke's bank account and start making out checks from it. One wonders whether the criminals knew whose name they were messing with, when they wrote those checks?

No one is safe from identity theft, not even the chairman of the Federal Reserve. Ben Bernanke's personal checking account became entangled in an elaborate identity-theft scheme after his wife Anna's purse was stolen last August. According to a District of Columbia police report, it contained her Social Security card, checkbook, credit cards and IDs...

was mugged in a "security" safe Walmart parking lot. Purse and wallet stolen. All identity and personal items gone including social security card. I could care less about the $80. taken. It's closing accounts, credit bureau freezes, fraud alerts and the future that I have to keep a watch for the rest of my life. This is a serious matter, not a joke in the least bit.

WHAT COMES ROUND GOES ROUND!
Let's see if it amounts to trillions in theft?

Posted by: Karma at August 28, 2009 11:36 AM

If you are carrying around your social security card in your wallet you are TOTALLY setting yourself up for identify theft. You gave them super easy access to all your info.

They only need name, address, and social security # to get started

Posted by: goodgarsh at August 28, 2009 11:36 AM

Please remember to NEVER carry your Social Security Card with you. This should always be kept in a Safe Deposit Box. However, that being said; thieves have access to our personal info at the click of a mouse. Please flag your Personal Information with TransUnion, Experian, etc. as FRAUD ALERT. This only slows them down, though. Even have your Bank assist you with NOT opening any ONLINE Accounts in your name; you have to open it at your local branch. When purchasing gas, use a "dummy" debit card with a small balance, as it can be closed quickly. Avoid using your PIN as much as possible. Try not to use ATM's and convenience stores that you are NOT familiar with. Check your accounts daily. Stay away from Auto withdrawals as much as possible. Secure your Home Equity lines of credit so they can NOT access them with a PHONY Online Account. Try to only carry your Checks with you when you know you are going to make a purchase. Never do your Online Banking on a computer that is NOT SECURE. Be smart, play safe, and pass this on to family and friends.

Life is more than a credit rating. Just live and forget the fear. If it happens-it happens, you still have life right?

Posted by: Anonymous at August 28, 2009 11:44 AM

'theives' my guess, it's one crack head, they'll find him using her ID to cash a check or smoking pipe behind the walmart and since when do the serious 'theives', break into car in a crowded parking lot and steal wallets? They push ID theives typically steal 100,000+ user names and passwords; not your wallet; to top it off, what was she thinking keeping her SSN card in her wallet?
Don't worry; MY tax dollars and more will get to the bottom of this and the culprit will be exonerated, forgiven, dinner with the president and appointed head of wallet theft!!! (Did I mention a huge uncappable salary, 401K, gov health inurance) I'll bet he'll be REALLY sorry, too.

Actually I stole Bens Wallet when he was taking a dump in the mens room. His stool smeeled so bad and he had mudbutt so he had to take off his soiled underwear. Thats when I snatced his wallet.

Posted by: anonymous at August 28, 2009 11:53 AM

There needs to be a better way than a SS# that anyone can get from public records. I had a ex-wife that used my information for years and I still am trying to get right.

There are too many companies now making a buck from this crime. Pay cash I guess.

Posted by: Mark at August 28, 2009 11:54 AM

You would think that this woman would know better than anybody that you don't carry your soc. card with you. Identity theft does need to be taken more seriously. It's a big deal in the media when the rich and powerful have this happen, but for those of us not lucky enough to fall into that category, we're screwed. My husband is still dealing with Identity theft from a few years back where the IRS thought he was working for multiple companies he'd never heard of in a different state! For those that are rich, this goes away easily and they see justice, but for those of us who are barely getting by, this could mean the difference between having a roof over your head and foreclosure!

Posted by: Anonymous at August 28, 2009 11:55 AM

Posted by: dan at August 28, 2009 11:55 AM

Actually the Federal Reserve does not get taxpayer money... the receive their money from financial institutions that they are suppose to regulate (i.e. banks, investment firms, ect.), which is used to supply money back to the U.S. Federal Government.
When the purse was stolen Federal Reserve Police were notified and Special Agents w/the Federal Reserve; however, since it occurred w/in DC and not on Federal property DC-MPD has primary jurisdiction, but USSS, Inter-Pol all assisted.

I have seen some pretty stupid posts but you people that wish these things on someone else ought to have your head examined. Have you been a victim?

Posted by: Dave at August 28, 2009 12:10 PM

Trouble is, the cops and banks are never serious about this. My mother-in-law had her purse stolen with credit cards, drivers license and a check book as well. One year later, after numerous conversations with the bank and the cops, the perp still cashes one of her checks EVERY Friday afternoon at one of 3 different grocery stores. A check written on a long closed account with a name posted at every one of the stores as NO CHECKS from this person. The bank is still charging her the overdraft fees and every week we have to call and fight with them over it. It's just idiotic. I'm sure the perp shows them the stolen drivers license and they just don't read it or just don't care. It's taken a year to get all the credit card companies to stop harrasing her over charges made on the stolen cards as well AND the card companies DESTROYED any credit she ever had.

Posted by: peter pan at August 28, 2009 12:10 PM

My husband and I were victims back in December of identity theft - some kid in California got a hold of my debit card number after ordering my wedding bands online and got almost $1200 of our money. The bank was great; but we filed a police report and nothing ever happened. Yes, this is no joke for Bernake, but yes, let's hope suddenly this is taken a little more seriously.

Well put Dave - there are some really stupid posts on here. Just do what I do - chalk it up to immaturety and ignorance. Having been a victim of identity theft I can tell you it is a living hell. Sometimes it takes something like this for people (who can DO something about it) to make a change. The way in which the credit bureaus control our personal and professional lives is nothing to be taken lightly. They have the power to cripple us - even if we are not at fault. Maybe now Washington will see that system needs to be re-vamped also. For several years I've written many letters to DC, the credit bureaus and the ACLU. Not one has so much as received a response.

@Dave: Yes I could do better, I'd End the Fed. This guy is a criminal along with all the other Banksters, including Geithner, Paulson, and the men they work with including Bush and now Obama. They stole from the public and taxed us through inflation to enrich their buddies failed businesses. The CEO's at Goldman Sachs, CitiBank, Chase Manhattan, etc, are still billlionaires. You're poorer each day as the dollar declines because they printed so much to give to them.

I'll bet his government contacts get everything straightened out for him and his wife, clear up his credit, get his score back to perfect. Then he'll forget about it and wonder why the little people have so much trouble with such things.

What if he got treated the same as everyone else and didn't have various government agencies ready to wait on him hand and foot?

Being a victim of ID Theft is something that nobody should have to deal with... I think we all agree on that! It really doesn't matter "who" you are... it sucks!

What's even more screwed up with our judicial system and ID Theft is that where I live, for example (Washington State) there is a three year statute of limitations to prosecute the criminal.

So in other words, the stupid b*tch that stole my fiance's SS # to open a credit card WILL get away with it because it has been over 4 years.... we just found out about it 3 weeks ago...accidently... when wages were reported on his Social beacuse in an unrelated case there was an illigal immigrant using it for work purposes!

How's THAT for justice??

Did he learn about this through Freecreditreport.com? Whoever said life is not just a credit rating has never been denied credit, employment, housing or services because of bad credit. Ordinary people can suffer bad credit from identity theft; but also from an unexpected job loss, business closure, illness, divorse, just to name a few reasons over which we have no control. The system needs to change if the average American is to keep freedom and liberty. People like Bernake are too high profile to feel the sting that this would do to the credit report of an ordinary person so nothing will be done to change policy or to help people with bad credit through no fault of their own.

Posted by: anonimous at August 28, 2009 2:47 PM

Isn't just like the government. DON'T CARRY YOUR S.S. Card, however you MUST hace your "MEDICARE" Card upon which is clearly printed your Social Security Number.

Posted by: rob at August 28, 2009 3:14 PM

And by the way... it's not just people who are "stupid enough" to carry their Social Security cards around with them! In our case, the illegal bought his SS number from some guy in Vegas for $150 along with his fake green card!

Don't EVER think it won't happen to you! Be SURE to check your credit report EVERY year (for free) because it sure sucks to be the victim TWICE when the criminal gets away with it!

Posted by: victim at August 28, 2009 3:15 PM

Posted by: Blah at August 28, 2009 3:24 PM

Her generation was taught to CARRY the social security card. And with good reason; every time you get a new job, you have to use it to prove you are an American citizen. ID theft wasn't such a big deal; people were more honest then. When they stole your purse and wallet, they took the $80.00 and threw the rest in the trash.

In some states, they put your social security number on your driver's license. THEN, when you go to the car dealership they copy your license. When you go to the pool hall, they HOLD your license (and sometimes give it back to the wrong person). And every time you cash a check, you have to present your driver's license to prove who you are.

Perhaps our society shouldn't be using the SSN as a personal id number. In the past, you couldn't do that: it was illegal. The number was only to be used for social security matters. Now, schools use it for student numbers; doctor's offices use it to identify patients (and their databases use it for a primary key); and states use it to collect imcome taxes.

So, go figure. SSN ==> Id Theft ==> two to three YEARS of Hell trying to recover your good name. Sure, you can get the cards back. Of course you can close your accounts and open new ones. But if they sell your SSN to some illegal alien who then uses it to work in the US, you'll play HELL getting the Social Security Administraton to admit that as a possibility (even if you work in Maine and the thief works in Texas; and the IRS will be looking for you, too because of all of that unreported income.

I was a victim of identity theft too. A few suggestions are to file a police report and contact the Attorney General's, which has a wider scope of jurisdiction. In my case, Chicago Police Dept. informed me that, if the theft took place outside of my city, I would have to file a report in each city of occurence, which sounded stupid to me. So, yes inconvience me more. But, the sargent also suggested going to the IL Atty. General's office.

Second, I placed a 'freeze' on my credit history with all three credit bureaus.

Third, drafted a letter to each credit card company w/a copy of the police report mailed via certified mail. But, when the Atty. General's office started sending letters on my behalf, everyone began to fully cooperate.

Yes, it is a nightmare for ALL victims.

Id theft what a joke. Just a thought, we would not have id theft if we were not required to carry an id to show who we already are. I am standing in front of you I am that I am and no one eles can be that. But with a Id you can be me or anbody eles if you know how to do it. In this slow and low paying jobs, the workers are frustraded because they are forced to work for 10% and not 100% of their labor at a job they don't like to be at, so they are not going to pay attention to detial like that. They just want to work and go home. To me it looks like the id is the cause. If we knew the truth we would not need to register our selfs or create an account for someone elese to use. The id thef is with the people who control the system, the are using our id every day causing all these problems. Start asking questions.

Another I.D. theft.

My wife was raped, our house was shot up by the perp repeatedly, and still is, and to top it off, an orginization designed to help the victim,
accidently served up her S.S., in which the perp
already has one I.D. theft conviction.
No, she does not carry her S.S. with her.
No, there is no help, and when your a rape victim,
and you try to stand up for yourself, you will be victimized over and over again, by the perp, as well as the system.
Too bad we cannot afford and armed guard.
What a wonderfull justice system our country has.
You always here about it, but then it actually happens to you, and you find out, that the law protects the criminals, not the victims.
You even get to be treated like dirt, by authorities, and judges who don't care, unless
it's someone they care about.

Ok, feel sympathy for the wife, who was mugged. Only an animal would resort to intimidating, terrifying and overpowering a lady to get a purse that may be empty in the first place. Feel sympathy for the fact that on the average, its a tedious, frustrating and sometimes several year long project to get evereything back to normal after ID theft. But for the love of Peanut Butter what blows my mind is the sheer number of self righteous ignorami who somehow can't stop themselves from scolding those (like myself) who can chalk this up to Karma, or feel little sympathy for the billionaire who I'm pretty sure "cares not for who writes your laws, since he issues and controls your currency". Researcch the origin of THAT paraphrase. He wouldn't cross the street to piss on you if you were on fire. And even worse I'm afraid. He, as well as his lawyers and partners and associates are constantly trying to create new ways to increase their own wealth in perpetuity, at YOUR expense! Whether its inflation, or snapping up floundering real estate, businesses, and commodities in a time of recession. Oh wait aren't we in a "recession" now? The "Federal" Reserve is as much a govt agency as Federal Express. The Great Depression was orchestrated and the Fed born. So was this recession, and what's cooking in the oven now? The North American Union? One currency? Brilliant. A brand new frontier for Bernanke to put a stake in and turn billions to trillions. Don't shed a tear for that jackass, and stop wasting screen space by telling us to imagine his inconvenience and feel his pain. He made one phone call, from his kitchen, and would seriously not have to give it a single thought subsequently. We're living in the feudal system and don't kid your self: we are serfs, and he is Royalty. Exactly how he plans to keep it.

All read this: Two of my daughters, N and F both bought personal artilces at a walmart location in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Both purchased at the same location and both in the morning on different days. About 30 min later, N lost $460 and F lost over $300 from their bank accounts. This theft occurred about 300 miles away, in Montreal Canada. They contacted their bank (they use same bank) and were told that they could report topolice if they wished but it wasnt going to help them at all. But thank goodness to the Canadian banking system. The bank took the losses and wrote it off as thefts but the N and F got full money credited in 7 days. God Bless Canadian banking system.
Moral of the story: Never use debit unless you must. Use credit that doesnt require any pin number entry.

Hahahaha Lou's comment was comepltely true!!

They don't need your social security card anyways, they probably have it. They can look that stuff up in public records, tax records...then all they need to do is make up fake ones and wahlah! Watch your mail as well. And if you should mail something out, take it inside...don't put it into the boxes outside.

((((((Ok, feel sympathy for the wife, who was mugged. Exactly how he plans to keep it.))))))

Thanks Mike! You hit the nail on the head.
And this, what Mike said is a fact.

I find it very interesting that everyone is placing so much emphasis on not carrying ss card on person. The reason why is because I never did yet my ID/ss# was stolen and I've dealth with it to no avail for 14+ years. Illegal aliens and other thiefs can "buy" your number (at random) and have fake ID made using this number. They use it for employment and then eventually build their own cr. files. I haven't received any relief from govt agencies, IRS, cr. bureaus etc..they just forward you to yet another agency. VERY FRUSTRATING!! My thought is maybe if someone with the ability to make change gets burned and it becomes more personal to them change will be implemented.

Everyone likes to say why she carry her ss card on her. I don't know about D.C. but where I live my ssn is on my DL so they have the information wither I carry the card on me or not. I still don't keep my card on me, but before you call her a idiot maybe you should think about something like that if it was on her DL any way they still get her info wither ss card is in the purse or not. I think you should not leave something that important unattended in your car however. She should have taken her purse with her.

Wait he wants what now? Now only if that could happen to the other assholes that took advantage of the American tax payers. We would not have not needed a bail out had Bush regulated things and not wasted money on one war that was abandoned then decided to turn around and invade another country oh and heavy tax cuts for the rich.

Posted by: meh at August 28, 2009 8:55 PM

Total bs article. You are not responsible for checks someone else has forged. Just an attempt to make him seem as a regular guy.

I don't wish this on anyone too, but at the same time it's very upsetting how people don't even think of the victim until they become the victim.
I mean we're in very hard times and people stealing
other peoples identity. I DON'T GET IT!! We also
are struggling in life and I don't go around taking
peoples identity just so I can buy things that
the other person worked really hard for. Actually
I had loan out $$$ to this jerk whom said he would
pay me back, but never did. FOR ALL YOU CROOKS
OUT THERE, GOD WILL GET YOU AND JUDGE EVERY PERSON
ON THIS PLANET FOR WHAT HE/SHE HAS DONE. WE'RE
ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR ACTIONS.

I hope Mr. Bernanke gets his credit straightened out quickly and that the process is used to assist other victims fix their credit theft problems. I am hoping I can get to retirement without having to deal with this problem. I believe there are 2 possible protections for me. 1. Pay $12.95 a month or
2. When i am retired and no longer need good
credit, be late on my payments so no one will
open new credit cards for me or anyone trying
to use my credit information.

Thank you microfinance for providing me with a brain to think with! When one is the head chair of the FRBC, and holds a high degree in business, this type of matter should be taken care of with ease before lunch break. No need to spend citizen's wealth to solve this; This task shouldn't even be a snack to someone with this level of acumen.

A Product of America (I wouldn't have it any other way)

LJB111

Now time to find $200,000 thousand to fix my arm. Ha, what am I saying... All Total cost for my operation wouldn't exceed $30,000 thousand. Maybe I should get arid of the middle man and ask the person who protects me and my rights to kindly take over the operation proceedings. I mean, if I trust him with atomic bombs, surely I can trust him to get me the lowest cost for an operation that any respecting republican wouldn't let their dog wear.

Posted by: Leonard Brisco at August 28, 2009 11:41 PM

You idiots have no idea how vulnerable you are. I work in the data protection space and let me share with you...be afraid...it can happen to you.

Posted by: G Money at August 28, 2009 11:43 PM

I wouldn't even be so poor if the Republicans didn't insist on paying me min. wage for something they refuse to do. I wonder how much compensation is required for something one rather not do. Let the Republican sit there with more money than he or she could ever spend while I dig thier shit trenches and die in debt!

Thirty million dems to how many republicans? who knows... why? you got to be present to be accounted for. I wish I had their problems... ohh, I'm being taxed 39% on my one million of revenue. Try living on the scraps you throw us, fucer! Some people!!

Still 100% American (Constitution style)

F*** Usury!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now a days technology is good an it was use to let theft to get more victims thru the digital technology, and the international community should push there leaders to protect the citizen savings and investments they should, put this matter on top of the table to prevent, how if, one of the president will be next victim. This is now the modern mobster.

PEOPLE NEED TO STRAIGHTEN UP AND START CARING FOR
ONE ANOTHER. TIME IS TOO SHORT TO BE HATING AND
OF COURSE "STEALING" FROM OTHERS. ANIMALS SEEM
TO HAVE WAY BETTER COMMON SENSE THAN PEOPLE. NOW
THAT IS SAD!!!!

"goodgarsh" and "Dano" (above); how is that you two know so much about how these ID theft things work? I will know to be on the high alert for anyone using those two names!
