This is really not as bad as all the hype made it out to be. Seems to me like yet another example of "the cover-up is worse than the crime."
It's almost always better just to let the truth out then try to cover it up, you can hardly ever succeed, and then you look doubly guilty when the truth breaks free and people see you were holding it down. Just makes small problems into big ones.
