He's been cast in what's already being considered a sure thing for the fall TV season, but rapper-actor-entreprenur LL Cool J isn't ready to declare victory.

"It's not a coronation, it's the beginning of a journey," he says of the role on "NCIS: Los Angeles," a spinoff of the CBS hit "NCIS."

"I'm not in the end zone dancing," he adds. "We're just kicking the ball off."

Production on the show starts in about two weeks, says the star, born James Todd Smith.

Chris O'Donnell co-stars in the series, set in the Office of Special Projects within the NCIS, which chases criminals who pose a threat to the nation's security.

"It's a huge responsibility," Cool J says. "You're joining one of the most popular franchises on the No. 1 network."

The rapper, born and reared in New York, is no stranger to TV, or to movies for that matter. He made his acting debut in 1986. From 1995 to 1995, he starred in the NBC and later UPN sitcom "In the House," and he's appeared in such films as "Charlie's Angeles," "S.W.A.T." and "Any Given Sunday"
